The History of Sound Release Date Set for Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor Movie

Following the acquisition of its North American distribution rights, Mubi has now revealed the release date for “The History of Sound,” an upcoming period romance drama featuring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor. This announcement follows the movie’s world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for both the Palme d’Or and Queer Palm awards.

In 1917, a gifted young musician named Lionel encounters David at Boston Conservatory, where their shared passion for folk tunes sparks a close friendship. After many years, Lionel gets a surprising letter from David, triggering an unplanned adventure through the wilds of Maine to gather traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, romantic involvement, and their pursuit of preserving these melodies will significantly impact Lionel’s life in ways he doesn’t even realize.

When is The History of Sound release date?

In September 2025, “The Story of Sound” will hit cinemas, coinciding with the releases of “Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter” and “The Long Walk”. This film is also set to premiere alongside several other notable movies like “The Conjuring: Last Rites”, “Him”, “A Magnificent Journey”, and “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Film”.

The film is Oliver Hermanus’s direction, with a script penned by Ben Shattuck who won the Pushcart Prize for his renowned short story of the same title. This production also features Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, Chris Cooper, Hadley Robinson, Raphael Sbarge, Peter Mark Kendall, Emma Canning, Briana Middleton, Alessandro Bedetti, and others in key roles.

This project is developed by a creative team consisting of Lisa Ciuffetti, Oliver Hermanus, Andrew Kortschak, Sara Murphy, Thérèsa Ryan, Zhang Xin, Tatiana Bears, Lara Costa Calzado, Giovanni Pompili, Bruno Vernaschi-Berman, and Sean Wheelan.
