The HATA Dome House Leans on “Ancestral Architectural Logic” in California

Designer Anastasiya Dudik, who taught herself the craft, has revealed an awe-inspiring, dome-shaped dwelling nestled at the base of the majestic Sawtooth Mountains in California. This structure mirrors ancient architecture while hinting at future-minded ideals. By integrating modern advancements with “ancient architectural reasoning”, Dudik labels her design approach as “future primitive,” focusing on eco-friendly adaptability.

As stated by Archinect, Dudik utilized airform, rebar, shotcrete, and stucco to construct a fire-resistant, seismically stable, and thermally efficient concrete dome specifically designed for the extreme desert conditions. Inspired by her upbringing in Ukraine, Dudik’s design also reflects the raw, Brutalist style reminiscent of Soviet-era Modernism in the country.

Rather than appearing aged by past events, this modern construction exudes a strikingly contemporary vibe, as if it were a residence on some far-off celestial body. The circular window portals and inner stainless steel accents collaborate to underscore the futuristic essence of its design.

Inside, the roughness of the walls and floors harmonizes beautifully with warm wooden fittings and decorative elements, creating an atmosphere where desert tones thrive both indoors and outdoors. To anchor the living experience even deeper, a cozy circular seating area is sunken into the floor. This enhances the contrast between indoor and outdoor spaces further. Outside, a paved terrace expands with additional furniture built-in, a gazebo, and a circular pool, seamlessly merging the living space with nature.
