Following the airing of the second-to-last episode in Season 6 of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” actor Max Minghella has expressed his thoughts about the sudden demise of Commander Nick Blaine, a character he portrayed. The actor not only discussed the dramatic ending of his on-screen persona, a role inspired by Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel bearing the same name, but also provided insights into the evolution of Nick’s intricate relationship with Elisabeth Moss’ character, June.
The Handmaid’s Tale’s actor on how chemistry with June led to Nick’s death
During a recent interview, Max Minghella explained that Nick’s conversation about June right before his demise in the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale was truly in line with his character.
The actor, while on set in Wales, discussed his character’s death in the highly praised Hulu series with Variety. He explained, “It seemed quite poignant and fitting for the character and his role within the show. His actions have always been influenced by that relationship. It was also pleasant to wrap up with Bradley [Whitford], who has turned into a close friend off-screen. This ending felt right as well.
In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9, Commander Nick Blaine meets a tragic end when he unwittingly boards an explosive-laden plane. It’s Bradley Whitford’s Commander Joseph Lawrence who orchestrates this bombing of the Commanders-only flight. Intriguingly, Josh Charles’ Commander Wharton invites Joseph on the flight, and despite his reluctance, he feels compelled to accept in order to preserve his disguise. Consequently, both Wharton, Lawrence, and the unaware Nick perish in the ensuing calamity of that episode.
Max Minghella discussed the development of his character’s bond with Elisabeth Moss’ June. He explained, “The Nick and June relationship provided a contrast from the more intense, heavy themes in the series. So, to establish that relationship within some of the bleak, pessimistic aspects we delve into in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ I was taken aback by it.
In Episode 9 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, we witnessed the demise of three High Commanders, including Nick. This episode appears to have masterfully prepared the ground for the series finale. The grand conclusion will be streamed on Hulu next week, specifically on May 27, 2025.
