It seems that, as per current news, the group responsible for creating the renowned Forza Motorsport series at Turn 10 Studios has been dismantled. Although Forza Horizon is still flourishing with frequent updates, its simulation-centric counterpart appears to have taken a backseat unofficially.
A Quiet Farewell To A Beloved Franchise
According to a former employee from Turn 10, it’s been announced that the Forza Motorsport team has closed its operations. He made this known via social media.
“Turn 10 Studios has shuttered the Forza Motorsport space and the team is no more. A very sad day for one of the best car racing video games. I loved my time there.”
Despite parting ways with Turn 10 in 2016, the developer continues to maintain strong ties within the automotive industry, now managing Jon Shirley’s esteemed car collection. His statements imply that this transition is not merely a reduction in scope but rather a comprehensive shift in the studio’s area of focus.
From Motorsport To Support
Now, it seems that Turn 10 is functioning as a support studio for Forza Horizon, a spin-off series that has since overshadowed its parent franchise in terms of both popularity and sales. Essentially, working closely with Playground Games, the principal developers behind Horizon, appears to be Turn 10’s main duty these days.
This news emerges during a larger trend of job cuts and internal changes within Microsoft’s gaming sector. Earlier in 2024, several Xbox studios such as Tango Gameworks (Hi-Fi Rush) and Arkane Austin (Redfall) experienced closures or reductions. Now, it appears that Turn 10 is the most recent team to be impacted by this broader reorganization process.
Microsoft’s Saving Measures Hit Cult Brand
Due to the apparent breakup of the Forza Motorsport crew, a significant force in the racing game genre is now absent. Since its launch back in 2005 on the original Xbox, Forza Motorsport served as a leading racing simulator, frequently compared to Sony’s Gran Turismo. Titles such as Forza Motorsport 7 and the 2023 remake showcased Turn 10 Studios’ commitment to innovation in terms of physics and realism.
It’s sad for fans, but also illustrative of the evolving gaming sector, that a well-known game studio division is now gradually closing its operations in a low-key manner.
It’s undetermined if Forza Motorsport will resurface under another team or be permanently put on hold. What is certain is that Microsoft is focusing on Forza Horizon for the time being, a decision that aligns with wider gaming industry shifts toward open-world and user-friendly gameplay. This change, however, might seem like a substantial and poignant loss to fans who appreciate in-depth, authentic racing simulations. In essence, one of the final outstanding racing simulators could have subtly reached its conclusion – without a triumphant farewell.
