As a seasoned Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fan who has navigated countless dungeons and formed bonds with countless Pokémon, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time I see a new Mystery Dungeon game announced… or rather, not announced. It’s been four long years since we last had a mainline entry in the series, and as someone who has spent countless hours exploring dungeons and forming friendships with my Pokémon companions, I can’t help but feel like something is missing from my life.
For the past four years, we haven’t seen a fresh Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game hit the shelves. The latest one to come out was in 2020, which was a Switch remake of the original game. A few weeks back, I penned an emotional piece reflecting on Explorers of Sky, a game that debuted fifteen years ago. In this timeframe, only two new games have been launched, leaving countless fans craving another taste.
Now that Nintendo has brought back Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on Nintendo Switch through their online service, perfectly timed for the annual Mystery Dungeon Day on Twitter, I find myself reminding The Pokémon Company and Chunsoft of a crucial request as a games journalist: please consider developing a fresh installment in the main series.
No more spin-offs, remakes, or remasters. A new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, please.
As a longtime fan of the Pokémon franchise, I have to admit that my feelings about the first Mystery Dungeon game are somewhat mixed. Growing up with the original games, this spin-off series held a special place in my heart as it offered something different from the traditional RPG format. However, upon revisiting the game recently, I find myself struggling to appreciate it as much as I used to.
In a world where space burials have become the norm two centuries from now, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is undeniably the game I’d choose as my cosmic companion when my time comes.
It’s not a hidden desire; every Pokémon Showcase or Nintendo Showcase has seen a flood of requests for a new game. Fans are clamoring for it, particularly in light of the less-than-stellar performance of recent mainline titles.
As a longtime fan of both Shiren the Wanderer and the Pokémon series, I must admit that I was quite excited when I heard about the latest installment of Shiren this year. Having grown up with both franchises, I have fond memories of exploring dungeons and battling monsters in both games. However, as a seasoned player, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed by the current state of the Pokémon dungeon crawler genre.
