As a dedicated fan of The First Descendant, I must say that the slight dip in player count is nothing to fret about. With the upcoming Season 1 launch on August 29th and the game’s confirmed appearance at Gamescom 2024, there’s a whole lot more to look forward to!

After being out for more than a month, I’ve noticed that the number of players in The First Descendant has dropped from its peak at launch. Some might be worried about this decrease, but as a fan, I don’t see it as a cause for concern, particularly when compared to other multiplayer games like Helldivers 2.

Fans can now look forward to the premiere of Season 1 on August 29th, as it’s been officially announced that TFD will be showcased at Gamescom 2024 during Microsoft’s grand finale event. With its impressive performance in pre-season, fans are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Season 1, which promises to be even more thrilling with the addition of new characters like Hailey and Ultimate Freyna, as well as a host of fantastic skins for the game’s roster of wicked playable characters.

Despite some decline, it’s clear that The First Descendant continues to maintain a substantial player base, not just individually, but also when compared to games like Warframe and Helldivers 2.

The First Descendant declining player count is nothing to worry about

Ever since it was released on July 2nd, the number of players for The First Descendant has significantly decreased. According to SteamDB, its maximum concurrent player count ever reached 264,860, but as of August 21st, the peak player count within a 24-hour period has fallen to 52,525.

Although there’s been a significant drop in sales, fans shouldn’t panic just yet. In a recent investors call by Nexon in August, they mentioned that the new game rapidly became their best-selling title and was among the top five most played games on Steam. However, it was noted that around 60% of its players are from console platforms.

Moreover, Nexon believes the decline in Steam activity is due to the departure of casual gamers. It’s acknowledged that the dedicated player base remains robust, with anticipation that the game will continue to thrive and contribute significantly to Q3 2024 success. The upcoming Season 1 launch is expected to boost the player count as well.

Despite appearing grim at first glance, having over 50,000 players daily is quite robust, and it remains among the top-played games on Steam. At this moment, it ranks as the 26th most played game, just a step behind the incredibly popular and successful Warframe, demonstrating its significant popularity.

Similarly to other multiplayer games, Helldivers 2 has seen a significant decrease in active players. The game saw a record-breaking peak of 458,709 players at one point, but as of August 21st, the number of active players within a 24-hour period has dropped to 26,425. Furthermore, True Trophies indicates that approximately 59% of players on PlayStation 5 stopped playing the game after the release of its Escalation of Freedom update.
