The Finals adds its unique flavor to a permanent Team Deathmatch mode in Season 6

As a devoted fan, I’ve been relishing the unique objective-based shooter experience that The Finals has provided for over a year now. Developer Embark Studios has been brimming with innovative ideas to enhance their game show-inspired shooter in the coming months, and one of these ideas might just be the most straightforward yet exciting: a permanent Team Deathmatch mode.

Even with intricate modes like Cash Out and Bank It, there’s an undeniable charm in the simplicity of team deathmatch. Recently, Embark Studios gave us a sneak peek of this classic gameplay, offering it as a limited-time experience until earlier this month. With Season 6, titled Rising Stars, The Finals is finally set to officially introduce its permanent Team Deathmatch mode, and Shacknews recently got the chance to dive in.

In simple terms, The Finals’ Team Deathmatch involves five-player teams battling it out across multiple maps. The objective is to accumulate the most money by defeating members of the opposing team. This mode doesn’t feature any special tricks, but the unique elements and mechanics of The Finals distinguish it from other Team Deathmatches in gaming. In a destructible arena with various loadouts provided by the game’s sponsors, Team Deathmatch can become quite intense and dynamic.

6th season of the game will unfold in arenas such as revamped Las Vegas Stadium and Seoul 2023, along with new partners OSPUZE, ALFA ACTA, and ENGIMO. In addition to these partnerships, Season 6 introduces fresh arsenals. The initial rounds witnessed most players opting for the Heavy class and testing out the M134 Minigun, a powerful tool that discharges multiple bullets per second but slows down the carrier. Within minutes, it became apparent in The Finals that TDM had immense potential with the M134, not only decimating opponents but also causing destruction to the terrain itself, collapsing significant portions of the arena. The game will also introduce additional weapons alongside the M134 Minigun. Medium-class characters can experiment with the CB-01 Repeater, a close-range lever-action rifle that delivers heavy blows as long as the user’s aim is accurate. Light-class characters can employ the new ARN-220 assault rifle, which comes with double magazines and high firing rate with minimal recoil.

Despite limited time to explore the newly renovated Las Vegas Stadium, the competitive spirit among teams escalated dramatically, with skirmishes frequently erupting atop the rooftops. The rooftops provided various zip-line paths and strategic spots for groups to regroup, set traps, or plan ambushes before leaping into open combat zones. Not long after, it seemed one of my teammates grew weary of the rooftop battles, as they grabbed a sledgehammer and began destroying the stadium’s interior, collapsing support beams and causing cracks in the roof.

In Season 6, Team Deathmatch is expected to be a standout feature, but that’s not all! The upcoming major update for The Finals tournament brings exciting developments. Since its introduction in Season 2, Power Shift has been well-received, and it’s now set to extend its reach into additional maps. The payload mode will now be accessible on the Bernal and Las Vegas Stadium maps. Moreover, Embark plans to refine weapons, gadgets, and game mechanics throughout the season to ensure a more balanced gaming experience.

For those who haven’t played The Finals in a while, Embark is working on enhancing the Tutorial and Practice modes to make it smoother for players to get back into the game. This includes upgrading the tutorial and practice dummies to move more seamlessly and adapt to newer mechanics.

Season 6 of The Finals marks the start of a prolonged journey into the realm of competitive gaming, with significant developments in esports anticipated throughout the year. In Season 8, which is due later this year, The Finals will introduce its first major tournament and will weave esports elements deeper into the game’s storyline by highlighting winning teams and tournaments on in-game advertisements and commentator discussions. Embark plans to gradually integrate esports culture within The Finals, with further details about this transformation to be revealed at a later date.

Keep an eye out as Season 6 of The Finals begins on Thursday, March 20. Don’t forget to check our dedicated The Finals page regularly to stay updated on any exciting developments or highlights you may have missed.

This preview is based on a Steam beta build provided by the publisher.
