The Final Fantasy Tactics remake is a complete rebuild because the original code is gone

In September 2025, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles will resurrect a cherished strategy RPG experience. This revival won’t merely polish the old content with new coatings; instead, it promises fresh interpretations of our beloved characters, narratives, and party management systems. Unlike a simple facelift, as suggested by Kazutoyo Maehiro, the game’s director, a total rebuild was necessary because the original code for the game no longer exists, requiring the game to be reconstructed from the ground up.

In a recent interview with Sony, conducted on the PlayStation Blog, Maehiro revealed insights into the reconstruction process of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. As a member of the original Final Fantasy Tactics team and an Events Planner, he explained the reasons behind rebuilding The Ivalice Chronicles entirely from ground up.

The primary cause for rebuilding Final Fantasy Tactics was that at the time of its initial release, Square Enix lacked preservation measures. Moreover, their policy involved replacing or erasing game codes, which means the original source code is now unavailable.

It’s noteworthy that Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is rumored to include a “Classic” mode, designed to replicate the initial gameplay. However, the team is said to have put in a lot of effort to make sure this classic experience remains true to its original essence.

By announcing a launch in September 2025, we’ll have to wait and see if Square Enix successfully delivers on their promise regarding Final Fantasy Tactics. Keep an eye on this topic for further developments and fresh news.
