The Fantastic Four Won’t Be an ‘Origin Story,’ Says Director

As a long-time comic book fan and avid gamer who grew up watching and reading various adaptations of The Fantastic Four, I’m both excited and intrigued by the news that Marvel Studios is taking a new approach with their upcoming reboot. The idea of not starting with an origin story and instead focusing on what comes next is a bold move that could potentially set this adaptation apart from its predecessors.

Matt Shakman, director of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” shared that the team working on the upcoming Marvel Studios reboot of this superhero team is not telling their origin story again. Instead, they are crafting a fresh and new narrative.

The new Fantastic Four movie’s production has commenced, but details about its storyline remain a secret. At this year’s Comic-Con, the film’s director and actors unveiled some insights during the Marvel Studios panel about their upcoming reboot.

One approach to paraphrasing this passage could be: “From the outset, we chose not to follow the conventional route of depicting an origin story. Instead, we’re putting a unique spin on things by starting our tale post-transformation. There are numerous recognized narratives that precede this pivotal moment, correct? Consequently, we decided to initiate our narrative toward the end of Act 1, offering a fresh perspective.” (Shakman expressed this in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.)

In an upcoming Fantastic Four film, Pedro Pascal will portray Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby takes on Sue Storm’s role (The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn is cast as Johnny Storm (Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm (The Thing). During a recent interview, Moss-Bachrach admitted that he hadn’t watched past adaptations of the Fantastic Four.

The actor explained to EW that they haven’t watched certain movies due to their work commitments. They added that watching those films wouldn’t have been beneficial for their role. When asked about how their project differs from others, the actor believes comparing projects isn’t helpful. Instead, they are focused on creating something unique, emphasizing that their production is distinct, without diminishing the value of previous works. Just as a play can be performed differently with various actors, their project will offer a unique experience despite similarities to other productions.

Pascal added, “Our role as a family in creating this experience is crucial for us, while the additional data and motivational content are beneficial.”

According to a screenplay penned by Josh Friedman, the upcoming Fantastic Four film will feature Julia Garner portraying the Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus. Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne have been added to the cast in yet-to-be-revealed roles.

The movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps” by Marvel, debuts in cinemas on July 25, 2025, as a part of the sixth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
