Mike Flanagan recently shared an unsatisfying news about the launch timeline for his revamped version of “The Exorcist”.
By May 2024, it became official that Flanagan would direct a new film for the Exorcist series. This announcement followed Blumhouse’s decision to abandon plans for David Gordon Green’s Exorcist trilogy, as The Exorcist: Believer did not meet fan and critic approval.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m super stoked about Flanagan’s reboot, but looks like the creator of “The Haunting of Hill House” just dropped some not-so-great news – it seems we might have to wait a bit longer than initially planned, with the release date possibly getting pushed back from March 2026.
What did Mike Flanagan say about The Exorcist reboot’s release date?
On Tumblr, Flanagan indicated that the launch of the new Exorcist film is yet to commence because he’s presently engaged in setting up the Carrie TV series.
As a die-hard fan, I must share some exciting news that might stir your anticipation – or perhaps quell it slightly. In an interview, Flanagan stated, “I’m afraid you won’t see The Exorcist reboot gracing our screens until March next year.” However, fear not, for he assures us, “There’s nothing to worry about.
As of now, no actors have been confirmed for Flanagan’s Exorcist movie, and specific plot points are still being kept confidential. In 2021, Universal and Blumhouse acquired the rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek for a whopping $400 million.
Flanagan expressed his excitement about a new project set in the world of “The Exorcist,” stating that the original film inspired him to become a filmmaker. He also mentioned that working with Blumhouse again, who he has collaborated with on several favorite projects, adds even more thrill to this opportunity. (via Variety)
The Carrie series by Flanagan is currently being developed for Amazon Prime Video. This project was given the go-ahead in April 2025, with filming set to commence in Vancouver soon. Actress Summer H. Howell portrays Carrie White, while Siena Agudong takes on Sue Snell, and Matthew Lillard steps into the role of Principal Grayle. Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White, Alison Thornton is Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek is Emaline, Amber Midthunder is Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah portrays Tina, Arthur Conti becomes Billy, and Joel Oulette takes on Tommy.
