For more than ten years now, the television series Pretty Little Liars has been off the air, yet it continues to bond its original cast members who found their footing in the show’s success. In a recent conversation, all five principal actors and the show’s creator, Marlene King, have hinted at the possibility of reuniting, not for a complete remake, but as a one-time movie production instead.
A Film Over A Reboot
Troian Bellisario, the actress who portrayed Spencer, stated that a movie might be more suitable than a revamped series, as it would provide a more impactful way to revisit the characters following seven years on the show. This idea becomes increasingly logical when considering past reboots such as “Ravenswood,” “The Perfectionists,” and “Original Sin” which didn’t survive beyond one or two seasons. These attempts didn’t recapture the original show’s success, making a standalone film seem like a more viable choice.
Everyone Would Love To Return
As a dedicated fan who’s grown up with “Pretty Little Liars,” I can say that hearing Lucy Hale (Aria) express her eagerness to return feels like a dream come true. We’ve stayed close over the years, and the thought of reuniting doesn’t seem far-fetched – it excites me! Shay Mitchell (Emily) echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that it would only feel authentic if all five of us were there together. For her, as for many of us, the magic of the show was rooted in our unbreakable bond. Sasha Pieterse (Alison) shares this enthusiasm and maintains a deep affection for both the cast and the characters we brought to life. Troian Bellisario concurs, suggesting that a reunion would only be fitting if it involves the original five of us. The idea of us coming back together is not just a possibility, but a promise of something extraordinary.
The Creator Is Interested, Too
Marlene King, the show’s creator, has shown enthusiasm about reuniting for a special episode. She admits that certain storylines, such as the age difference between Aria and Ezra, would be approached differently now, but she still takes great pride in the series and the characters it brought to life.
The Elephant In The Room: Looking Back On Aria And Ezra
Among the prominent story arcs on Pretty Little Liars, the romance between Aria and Ezra has been a topic of much discussion. Initially, many viewers perceived it as an intriguing, forbidden love tale. However, given the current awareness about grooming and power dynamics, this narrative is now being scrutinized more critically. Creator Marlene King admitted that if written today, this plot might take a different shape. Yet, she acknowledged the significant role the couple played in the show’s popularity and its impact on its success during its run.
In a reflection, Ian Harding, known for his role as Ezra, acknowledges that the relationship may have caused unease in retrospect. He went as far as calling Ezra “America’s most beloved pedophile” in his memoir, indicating an awareness of how problematic the character’s actions might appear today. Similarly, Lucy Hale, who portrayed Aria, stated that she has no regrets about the storyline but sees it in a new light now. At the time, being 19, she didn’t give much thought to the age gap or teacher-student dynamic. However, looking back, she recognizes and understands the valid concerns.
While there’s no formal plan as of now, the enthusiasm shown by both the cast and the creator suggests that a reunion could be more plausible than it has ever seemed before.
