As someone who’s been a devoted fan of network TV for decades now, I must admit that this year’s Emmy nominations have left me feeling a bit like a vintage car at a Tesla showroom. It seems like the streaming giants have taken over the stage!
Year after year, people often question whether a particular award show is worth tuning into. To be truthful, for many TV, movie, and music enthusiasts, the era of these prestigious events being can’t-miss has passed. It seems that they’ve grown stale, the hosts lack humor, and they tend to overrun. However, it’s not always the case that one should skip or record the event. For instance, the Emmys in 2024 could be a show worth watching.
Don’t believe me? Allow yours truly to get you hip to what’s set to unfold tonight Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC and abc.com (with a TV provider log-in). Cord-cutters will be able to view the award show through streaming TV providers like Fubo TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, Youtube TV and more depending on subscription and region. If you miss the three hour ceremony, you’ll be able to stream it on Monday via Hulu.

Why the Emmys are worth the watch in 2024
Eugene and Dan Levy are hosting
For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough. We’re thrilled to be able to raise a glass to this extraordinary season of television and can’t wait to spend the evening with you all on Sept. 15.
This father-son pair is sure to bring joy to everyone around them. Fans of the popular, Emmy-winning comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” appreciate and cherish them deeply, but even those who haven’t watched it can’t resist their charm from their interviews over the years. They exude authenticity and warmth, their humor always spot on and their positive energy is contagious.
With the Emmys 2024 ceremony entrusted to Eugene and Dan Levy, you can confidently anticipate a captivating broadcast event. Unlike some hosts, they won’t resort to making fun of or criticizing the nominees, as this doesn’t align with younger Levy’s sensibilities. According to Hello!, Levy clarified that their hosting style will serve as a “homage to television, not just the nominees, but to the medium that provided us both with our initial opportunities in the industry.
It’s always hit me in a funny way when jokes are done at the expense of people who are nominated. They’ve put in the work, and it’s their night, really, and you have to have enough respect for the awards show itself. Otherwise, why are we here?
Selena Gomez is finally up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Fans of “Only Murders in the Building” and Selena Gomez’s admirers have been eagerly anticipating the recognition of Gomez’s diverse talents in this hit Hulu series. Although she had previously been nominated for her role as an executive producer, this is the first time she has been recognized for her acting performance. This has been frustrating to many viewers who believe that Gomez’s exceptional acting skills warranted recognition years ago, just like her co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin (who are both nominated again this year!).
Olympians Ilona Maher and Caeleb Dressel will make a special appearance
Are you still basking in the excitement from the Paris Olympics? It seems that the organizers of the 2024 Emmys ceremony are too! Bronze medalist Ilona Maher, a contestant on Dancing with the Stars season 33, is planning a comeback following her captivating performance at the Olympics. The women’s rugby team from the USA, led by Ilona, won the hearts of viewers and made a strong argument for their sport. Many have been inspired to not only watch but also learn how to play.
Caeleb Dressel, the gold medal-winning swimmer who brought home the USA’s initial gold medal in the Paris Olympics through his performance in the men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay, has joined Maher. Dressel bravely discusses his personal mental health struggles and how his faith helped him persevere during difficult moments. One of the most touching aspects of the games was seeing Dressel share his victory with his wife Meghan and their son August.
Henry Winkler and Ron Howard are set to reunite for a Happy Days tribute
Similar to last year’s Emmys, we have an exciting plan for a special tribute honoring a timeless TV series. According to Variety, Henry Winkler and Ron Howard will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Happy Days by sharing fond memories of the comedy in a recreated Arnold’s Drive-In set, reminiscing about the good times.
There’ll also be a nod to Saturday Night Live, marking its 50-year milestone, but it’s uncertain if The West Wing cast will reunite for their 25th anniversary, although some members are presenters. Meanwhile, Variety has clarified that there won’t be any tribute for Friends as it turns 30 this year.
Greg Berlanti to receive the Governors Award
Undeniably, Greg Berlanti has left an indelible mark on television during his time, and he will receive the Governors Award at this year’s Emmys in recognition of his profound impact on the medium. As a prolific writer and producer, Berlanti has been instrumental in crafting and molding some of the most groundbreaking series over the past two decades. In fact, if you’ve found yourself captivated by a show during that time, chances are good that Berlanti played a key role in its creation. At one point, his production company had an astounding 15 shows airing simultaneously! To delve deeper into his remarkable legacy, read more about it as detailed in the Television Academy’s press release below:
Berlanti has been instrumental in breaking new ground within the TV industry by passionately championing the unseen and underrepresented in his storytelling. This commitment has earned him a place as a cultural trailblazer. He was one of the pioneers to introduce a gay character on primetime television with Dawson’s Creek, and he also showcased the first same-sex kiss between two men on U.S. network TV.
In the year 2006, Marc Guggenheim Berlanti penned and oversaw the production of “Brothers & Sisters” for ABC, a show that ran for five seasons and was notable for being the first to depict a same-sex legal marriage on network television. The following year, he also supervised the production of “Dirty Sexy Money” for ABC, marking the introduction of the first recurring transgender character on primetime television. In 2018, Berlanti further pushed boundaries by incorporating the first transgender superhero into his series “Supergirl”.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but praise this creator for his unwavering dedication to diversity and inclusion. In the realm of television, he pushed boundaries with Batwoman, a series that made history by featuring the first openly gay superhero as the lead character. Furthermore, in the literary world, he gifted us Red, White and Royal Blue, a heartwarming royal romance that resonated deeply with the LGBTQ+ community, offering them a story they could truly call their own.
At present, Berlanti serves as the executive producer for the upcoming NBC series titled “Brilliant Minds,” which is set to debut this fall. Notably, this show will star the first solo gay protagonist in an American medical drama.

Jelly Roll will perform during the In Memoriam segment
At the Emmys, you won’t typically find a lineup of musical performers, but there might be some musical segments based on who’s hosting or the planned tributes for the evening. However, the In Memoriam segment, where television talents who have passed away are remembered, usually includes a performer paying tribute to them all. For the 2024 ceremony, it has been decided that Jelly Roll, a versatile Southern singer-songwriter and rapper known for his unique blend of rock, hip hop, and country music, will be the one to take the stage. The song he’ll perform hasn’t been revealed yet, but there’s speculation that it will move listeners deeply.
Emmy 2024 nominees
Year after year, streaming platforms have taken over the Emmy categories, although traditional broadcast and cable networks haven’t been completely sidelined. The majority of the talent being honored this year comes from original productions on Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+. As a devoted fan of network television, I must admit to feeling a little resentful about this trend, but there’s no denying that this year’s Emmy nominees are all highly deserving. Here’s who’s in the running for the top awards!
