As a huge fan, I must admit that I’ve been left underwhelmed by the reception of “The Electric State” directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. Despite boasting an impressive cast including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Giancarlo Esposito, and others, this film is set to premiere on Netflix on March 14, 2025. Regrettably, it’s not just the critic reviews that have been less than stellar; the film has also received low scores on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

The Electric State gets largely negative reviews

The forthcoming science fiction film has received mixed reviews from critics. Set in a post-apocalyptic world following a robot rebellion in the ’90s, the plot follows an orphaned teenager (Brown) who journeys across the American West with a cartoonish robot, a smuggler (Pratt), and his companion, in search of her younger brother. This film is based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same title.

In my perspective, as an ardent admirer, I found Jonathan Sim’s review of “The Electric State” quite disheartening due to the unrealized potential he pointed out. He mentioned that the movie fell short in fully utilizing its captivating settings and failed to develop character relationships into a compelling source of drama.

In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney expressed that the Russo Brothers’ directorial work, titled “The Electric State,” appears more like a mimicry of a film rather than a genuine one. He put it this way: “This production fails to be either amusing or exhilarating. It resembles many streaming originals in that The Electric State seems less a true movie and more an imitation of one.

Simultaneously, critic Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian stated that the film appeared unoriginal and remarked, “It lacks depth, lacks originality, offering only a large block of digitally produced material with no unique essence.

Furthermore, Kristy Puchko from Mashable labeled The Electric State as “garbage” in her critique. In her own words, she described it as “stupid and chaotic,” which has left her feeling irate over the fact that it exists.

In review aggregators such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, the initial critiques of The Electric State weren’t generally positive.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit that the movie starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt didn’t exactly hit the bullseye with critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 20% rating, after reviewing 25 different perspectives. On Metacritic, things were slightly better, earning a score of 32 from just 10 reviews.
