Summary
- Despite being nearly a year apart, both Oblivion and Revenge of the Sith have both been re-released recently.
- This is noteworthy considering the original release of Oblivion actually had an easter egg referencing Anakin.
- That reference can still be found in the remaster and it’s even seen a bit of a graphical touch-up.
15 years ago, I found myself immersed in the futuristic world of Oblivion, a game that left an indelible mark on me. Recently, as we all ponder over the fact that it and Revenge of the Sith are almost two decades old now, I’ve been delighted to learn that the remastered version of Oblivion has preserved and updated one of its most iconic nods – a subtle reference to Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars.
Despite being in the year 2025 and anticipating future gaming advancements, the past few weeks have unexpectedly felt like we’ve stepped back in time rather than moving forward. The primary cause for this temporal anomaly was this week’s surprise release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which offered players a chance to revisit an enhanced version of the classic game, creating a mini-time capsule experience.
This week, it’s not just games that are looking like they did in 2005, movies are too, thanks to the successful re-release of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. It’s quite a coincidence, as these two famous entities shared a connection when Oblivion was first released, and they crossed paths back then.
Oblivion’s Nod To Revenge Of The Sith Is Still There In The Remaster
“I HATE YOU”
For those unfamiliar, the debut version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion contained an amusing hidden reference to Anakin Skywalker’s close call after battling Obi-Wan on Mustafar. In the movie, Anakin was sliced in half and left to char in lava as he desperately reached towards Obi-Wan, marking the beginning of his metamorphosis into Darth Vader.
In the initial release of Oblivion, there was a character immersed in lava that you could encounter at the first Oblivion gate. This figure extends its hand in the same manner as Anakin does in Revenge of the Sith. Given that both were released nearly simultaneously, it’s evident this is an intentional reference to the movie.
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith premiered in May 2005, and Oblivion followed closely behind in March 2006. Although they aren’t exactly the same age, the time difference is minimal.
Coincidentally, as both Oblivion and Revenge of the Sith commemorate their anniversaries around the same period, the Easter egg remains hidden within the remaster (thanks to Dark Strider). In fact, it has been given a touch-up, similar to the enhancements made throughout the game. This serves as a poignant reminder that we’re all essentially revisiting the past two decades, and surprisingly, most of us seem unfazed by this trip down memory lane.
