For many players of The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered, mastering the Persuasion minigame might seem mysterious at first, but the reward usually justifies the effort. Once you understand how it works, you’ll find yourself eager to use it during conversations with NPCs and boost your Speechcraft skill to the maximum.
This manual focuses on strategies to triumph in the game of persuasion within The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered.
How To Succeed At Persuasions
As you chat with the NPC, you’ll find a ‘Persuade’ option in the lower-left part of your screen. Go ahead and click on it to start persuading them.
With this first wheel, you can either initiate or conclude the mini persuasion game, or bribe the NPC for a significant boost in their ‘feelings’ towards you (provided you have enough gold). The cost in gold and the boost to their disposition are clearly shown. Now, let’s get started.
As a gamer, when I zoom into an NPC’s face now, I see a dial right smack in the middle that divides into four sections labeled Admire, Boast, Joke, and Coerce. This represents their current disposition score.
Your goal is to strategically employ these four stationary actions to positively influence the attitude of that NPC. Since their feelings are gradually worsening without any input from you, it’s crucial to act swiftly. By hovering over each action, you can see the impact it has on the NPC, as their facial expressions provide insight into their emotions. A scowling or squinting face indicates displeasure, while raised eyebrows (or upright ears for Khajits) and a smile suggest happiness. If unsure about an action’s effect, just click to see its impact on the attitude score before attempting a more serious approach in the next round.
In each instance of the mini-game and every future interaction, Non-Player Characters (NPCs) will consistently maintain their attitudes towards specific actions.
In every turn, you’ll be required to execute each action exactly one time. You are free to try and influence an NPC for as many turns as desired, but the order in which you perform these actions will depend on your strategic choice, which is a key part of this mini-game.
Note the circular patterns inside each segment. The number of circles in each segment, which can vary from 1 to 4 at random, signifies the intensity of the interaction. This could be a measure of its overall impact, whether it’s favorable or unfavorable, on a given disposition.
After choosing an action, only the rings associated with that action will spin clockwise, thereby deactivating and dimming previously used actions within this round. Essentially, repeating an action like Coerce in a single round becomes impossible, regardless of favorable conditions such as having four rings or making an NPC pleased. Your objective is to match the minimum number of rings with suboptimal actions, while maximizing the rings with superior ones.
Once you finish the initial round, the wheel resets, giving you options such as bribing, ceasing persuasion attempts, or restarting with the previous attitude score. This time, the rings on the wheel will be color-coded for a more straightforward method of deciphering NPC emotions. Rings that are red or orange suggest they feel hate or dislike, while those that are bluish-green or yellow indicate love or like, respectively.
Initially, pick an action you dislike or detest, if it has one or two symbols associated with it, or choose an action you like or love, if it has three or four symbols. During each turn, assess the option with the least number of symbols for disliked or hated actions, and keep going until you finish a round or succeed in persuasion. After each round, don’t hesitate to use incentives (bribes) to soften any unfavorable decisions you were compelled to make.
To reach a flawless persuasion score, you’ll probably need to play several games, regardless of how ideal the situation may be.
Speechcraft Effects On Persuading
The ability that most significantly impacts your chances of being convincing is referred to as Speechcraft. This skill can be improved by attempting to convince non-player characters (NPCs), among other activities. It’s best to elevate this skill to the level of Apprentice by age 25, if possible, because doing so will slow down the rate at which your Disposition decreases while you’re trying to persuade an NPC.
The more skilled you are in Speechcraft (persuasion), the better your chances are of being convincing. Improve this skill by practicing persuasion, especially on NPCs, and try to reach Apprentice level by age 25 for a slower decline in Disposition during persuasion attempts.
Novice
You have no particular perk.
Apprentice 25
Disposition decreases more slowly over time when trying to persuade a character.
Journeyman 50
You can rotate once for free when trying to persuade a character.
Expert 75
Bribes cost much less.
Master 100
When attempting to convince a character, persistence no longer weakens the relationship, and the least favored option causes less negative effect on the disposition.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve mastered all the tricks to secure victories in every persuasion attempt within The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
