The Eames Institute Unveils First-Ever Public Installation Ahead of San Fransisco Design Week

During San Francisco Design Week, the Eames Institute of Endless Wonder will collaborate with SHVO and the Transamerica Pyramid Center for the debut of their initial public display, which is not usually found outside the Eames Archive.

The latter part of Ray and Charles Eames’ productive collaboration, spanning from 1968 to 1978, is emphasized in this account of their groundbreaking works. This significant period overlaps with the completion of the renowned Transamerica Pyramid Center, adorned with original Eames designs within its offices. Michael Shvo, SHVO’s Chairman and CEO, stated, “Much like the pioneering creations of the Eameses, the Transamerica Pyramid was a design that was ahead of its time when it was unveiled in 1972.”

The Eameses, characterized by a spirit of constant improvement rather than radical overhaul, spent the decade perfecting their designs for longevity and adaptability. As Herman Miller and Vitra moved towards servicing contract office markets, the Eameses made significant material advancements, transitioning from predominantly plywood and fiberglass to injection-molded plastics and polyurethane. In terms of form, they placed growing emphasis on ergonomic comfort as the work environment evolved.

Displaying timeless classics such as their iconic shell chairs and plush sofas, the collection also showcases lesser-known designs that have seldom been seen by the public. Llisa Demetrios, granddaughter of the Eameses and chief curator, expressed, “As an era in my grandparents’ design work that is often undervalued, it was essential to unearth some forgotten gems and feature them in this exhibition.” She added, “It’s thrilling to showcase pieces created during my lifetime, I’m delighted to shed new light on each of these hidden treasures through this display.” Furthermore, the refurbished Transamerica Pyramid Center will host a series of events celebrating California’s rich design history.
