On April 20, 2023, the series “The Diplomat” made its premiere on Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 TV list (English category), garnering a total of 57.48 million viewing hours. Given the exciting cliffhanger ending, viewers can’t wait to see what unfolds next!

But first things first: When is the new season going to release, exactly?

The Diplomat Season 2 | Release Date

It’s great news! Netflix has officially announced that The Diplomat Season 2 will start on October 31, 2024. Looks like I have my Halloween entertainment sorted now!

To remind you before we delve into the exciting cast ahead (hopefully!), let me briefly recap how the first season concluded:

Towards the end of Season 1’s finale, Kate uncovers an astonishing truth: The architect of the British aircraft carrier explosion in the pilot episode turns out to be Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. As if things couldn’t get any worse, the episode concludes with a second blast, suggesting that Kate’s husband Hal, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, office clerk Ronnie, and MP Merritt Grove might have been caught in the ensuing chaos.

The absence of our US ambassador character, who ascended from the carrier ladder to a high-ranking government post in the first season, would make the show incomplete. Consequently, it has been announced that Keri Russell will reprise her role as Kate Wyler. She expressed her excitement about returning for another installment of this intelligent and witty series.

Other Season 1 actors making a comeback (hopefully…) include:

  • David Gyasi as Foreign Secretary, Austin Dennison.
  • Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief, Eidra Park.
  • Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff, Billie Appiah.
  • Miguel Sandoval as US Secretary of State, Miguel Ganon.
  • Michael McKean as US President, William Rayburn.
  • Celia Imrie as Meg Roylin.
  • T’Nia Miller as Dennison’s sister Cecilia.

We’ve added a renowned talent to our ensemble for season 2! Actresses “Allison Janney” and “Kristen Bell” will be gracing our screens as guest stars. Allison Janney, a seven-time Emmy Award winner and an Oscar recipient, will portray Vice President Grace Penn throughout the entire season.

The Diplomat Season 2: What Do We Know About The Plot?

Following a sudden ending with many unanswered questions at the close of Season 1, it’s fortunate that we will find some answers in Season 2.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but recall the nail-biting climax of Season 1, where out of nowhere, two massive blasts rocked the scene. These unexpected detonations were potentially catastrophic, putting at risk key characters like Kate Wyler’s husband Hal, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, office clerk Ronnie, and MP Merrit Grove.

We will learn eventually if they perished in the explosion or are receiving treatment at a hospital, as Hal Wyler (played by Rufus Sewell) mentioned during an interview with Tudum.

I hope we all survive. What can I say? I mean, I loved the dramatic turn. I just have to hope that everyone will be OK. But the drama needs to be real. […] I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows?

As a devoted fan, could it be that there’s more excitement ahead for us? But let’s keep our enthusiasm tempered with a touch of patience.

Deborah Cahn, the showrunner, expressed that she aimed to “bring together all the varying aspects of political and personal relationships within a single event, which simultaneously fractures them all.” This is the reason behind the climactic and intense finale.

So, mark your calendars for October 31 – we’re in for some dramatic turns, it seems!
