The Diplomat season 2 finale hints at larger role for one new character in season 3

As a seasoned viewer of political thrillers and someone who has witnessed their fair share of shocking twists and turns, I must say that The Diplomat season 2 has truly outdone itself with its gripping finale. The cliffhanger was so intense it felt like I needed a defibrillator myself!

Caution: Detailed spoilers for the final episode of The Diplomat’s second season lie ahead. If you have watched all six episodes, feel free to continue reading, but beware if you haven’t!

Indeed, here’s the news: The second season of “The Diplomat” has undeniably provided the year’s most gripping cliffhanger! This Emmy-nominated Netflix original political thriller made its return on October 31, immersing us once again in the tense professional journey of U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler, skillfully navigating a web of challenging circumstances.

Season 2 of “The Diplomat” resumes with events immediately following the season 1 cliffhanger, where a car bomb explosion in London came close to claiming the lives of Kate’s husband Hal, her deputy chief of mission Stuart, and tragically took the lives of Merritt Grove and one of Kate’s embassy staff members, Ronnie. A significant portion of the season explores the reality behind this attack and its potential link to last season’s carrier attack incident.

Throughout the six captivating episodes of season 2 (due to production reasons, there were less episodes compared to season 1), I, as an ardent fan, have observed that my favorite character, Kate, has been weaving numerous hypotheses regarding the attacks. She’s firmly convinced that “the source of the trouble is within our midst” and Prime Minister Trowbridge had a hand in the carrier assault. However, it turns out in the season finale that Vice President Grace Penn was the one who planted the idea in Margaret Roylin’s mind to hire Lenkov for the ship shooting incident.

However, here comes the truly astounding part: Kate expresses her intention to run for vice presidency and assigns Hal the duty of informing Secretary of State Ganon about Penn’s involvement in the attack. Yet, Hal doesn’t follow through with her instructions as planned. In an unexpected move, he places a spontaneous call to President Rayburn instead. Regrettably, the shock and strain of this revelation leads to a fatal heart attack for President Rayburn.

Grace Penn could have a much bigger presence in season 3

Just moments following President Rayburn’s passing, Grace Penn ascends to the presidential line of succession, assuming the presidency of the United States. Since Hal failed to inform Ganon about Penn’s connection to a UK terror incident, this information remained hidden with Rayburn but is now known by Kate and Hal. Penn is aware that they are aware, and this knowledge will shape the course of events in season 3.

Since Penn has taken up the role as president, it’s likely that Allison Janney may make multiple appearances in season 3, possibly even becoming a regular character. However, at this point, Netflix has not yet specified whether she will appear in a recurring or main role for the upcoming season.

Michael McKean didn’t have a main role in “The Diplomat” as President Rayburn, despite portraying the president. Similarly, Juliana Margulies might not be a permanent cast member, given her high-profile acting career, but Penn’s character is significantly more prominent and substantial compared to Rayburn’s part.

In the upcoming third season of the series, it’s highly probable that Janney will maintain her presence, at the very least, in a recurring role. However, given her exceptional performance in season 2 that was worthy of an Emmy nod, fans are eagerly anticipating that she might take on the lead role for all eight episodes as a primary character. Considering Kate’s ongoing confrontations with Penn and her ambitious pursuit of the vice presidency, it remains to be seen what twists and turns her storyline may bring.

Keri Russell and Allison Janney were truly exceptional when they shared the screen together. Their combined talent is a sight to behold, and we eagerly anticipate seeing more of it in ‘The Diplomat’ season 3. The cast and team are currently filming season 3 in both London and New York City, so stay tuned for updates on Allison Janney’s role as the production progresses.
