As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of chilling films, I must say Lee Daniels’ latest offering, “The Deliverance,” is a unique addition to the genre. Having been an executive producer on “The Reading” and now taking the reins for this supernatural horror flick, it’s clear that he’s diving deeper into the realm of the unsettling.
Following his role as executive producer for BET+’s supernatural horror film “The Reading”, Academy Award-nominated director Lee Daniels ventured into creating a horror movie of his own, titled “The Deliverance“. This terrifying creation is now available on Netflix following a brief theatrical release.
Similar to The Reading, The Deliverance can be categorized as a chilling horror film dealing with supernatural elements. Directed by Daniels from a joint screenplay penned by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, this movie is loosely based on the harrowing real-life tale of Latoya Ammons, a single mom who alleged that she and her family had encountered an array of supernatural occurrences within their home in Gary, Indiana.
In “The Deliverance,” we journey with Ebony Jackson, a hardworking single mom grappling with life’s challenges, who seeks a new beginning by relocating her family to Pittsburgh. Indeed, you’ve understood correctly. This isn’t your typical high school horror flick; it carries an R rating due to its graphic violence, strong language, and adult themes like sexual references. The movie does contain scenes of smoking and drinking, but none involving minors. Although there are sexual references, no explicit content is shown. However, be warned that the language used in this film is extremely profane, with frequent use of words such as “bitch,” “motherfucker,” and “ass.”
In contrast, “The Deliverance” isn’t predominantly a gruesome movie. Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of horror films, but this one doesn’t really scare me. If it’s a genuinely terrifying exorcism movie that gives you chills, I recommend checking out “The Exorcist” (1973), “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005) or “The Conjuring” (2013). Trust me, those movies will definitely make your skin crawl and leave you feeling uneasy!
