The Decameron soundtrack mixes medieval score with modern songs (full list)

As a hardcore gamer and music enthusiast, I was utterly captivated by Netflix’s new original dark comedy series, “The Decameron.” Having binge-watched all eight episodes, I can confidently say that this show offers more than just its satirical humor and shocking plot twists – it delivers an unexpected auditory experience as well.

Netflix introduced a fresh, dark comedy series named “The Decameron” on July 25. As viewers delve into the eight episodes, they’ll find more than just the witty satire and shocking plot turns – an unexpected treat awaits: the captivating music score.

In the style of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” with Kirsten Dunst, the miniseries “The Decameron” breaks free from its setting in the Black Plague era of 1348. It introduces modern pop-rock songs from the ’80s and ’90s, adding an unexpected twist. This is not what you’d typically encounter in a medieval series. Instead, “The Decameron” challenges assumptions, including those related to music, daringly incorporating tunes from Modest Mouse and Duran Duran.

In addition to surprise contemporary tunes scattered across the eight episodes, the show maintains a sense of time and place in the 1300s through its scoring. Medieval music with lively strings and harmonious voices complements the instrumental pieces. The soundtrack album, featuring compositions by Ruth Barrett, was made available on Netflix from July 19.

The Decameron songs by episode

In my gaming experience, I’ve come across The Decameron, a unique show with an intriguing soundtrack. I was taken aback when I discovered that Modest Mouse and Duran Duran were among the artists whose songs graced its episodes. The unexpected introduction of Depeche Mode’s “Master and Servant,” from 1984, in the very first episode left me pleasantly surprised. The ’80s New Order track and the ’90s Edwyn Collins song that followed were great additions to the mix as well.

Many of the tunes in the show are oldies from the ’80s and ’90s, but a more contemporary addition is the 2009 hit “Daniel” by Bat for Lashes that’s included.
