The Crow Producer ‘Surprised’ Original Filmmakers Aren’t Proud of New Bill Skarsgård Movie

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of comic book adaptations, I find myself torn between two worlds when it comes to The Crow. On one hand, I respect the legacy and the tragic circumstances surrounding the 1994 film, which I first watched as a young lad, captivated by Brandon Lee’s performance and Alex Proyas’ vision. On the other hand, I’m excited about the prospect of a fresh take on this iconic character, with Bill Skarsgård stepping into the role.

Molly Hassel, the producer of “The Crow”, expresses her surprise that the filmmakers responsible for the 1994 version don’t seem to take more pride in the recent release featuring Bill Skarsgård.

The film titled “The Crow” is set to release soon and offers a fresh perspective on the 1989 comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr. In this adaptation, Alexander Skarsgård portrays both Eric Draven and The Crow, while Shelly, Eric’s fiancée, is played by FKA Twigs.

Alex Proyas, the director of the 1994 film adaptation of The Crow with the late Brandon Lee, has openly expressed his disapproval towards the modern remake of the movie. In a Facebook post from March 2024, he said, “I don’t find pleasure in criticizing other filmmakers’ work. I believe the cast and crew genuinely meant well on this project, just as we all do in any production. However, the fans’ reactions tell a story. The Crow isn’t merely a movie. Brandon Lee sacrificed his life during its making, and it was completed as a tribute to his unfulfilled talent and tragic demise. It is his legacy that should be preserved.”

What did The Crow producer say about the new movie?

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Hassell expressed her astonishment at the responses she’s witnessed from the creators involved in the 1994 movie “The Crow”.

She stated, “It ought to instill a sense of pride,” she said. “I find it remarkable that the initial movie creators haven’t felt more proud yet, given that it deviates from the original path but is crucial for tackling timeless themes like love and grief.”

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d put it like this: “When it comes to the fresh take on The Crow, we didn’t feel like treading the same old path because we believed that would be unjust to the original movie. Instead, we wanted to blaze our own trail, almost as a tribute to its legacy. We’re saying, ‘Look, we’ve discovered a unique angle for the story, and we want both versions to thrive with their distinct narratives and fan bases.'”

The Crow releases in United States theaters on August 23, 2024, from Lionsgate Films.
