Synopsis:
Mike D’Angelo operates a modest comic book store located within a Las Vegas shopping center. Despite completing art school and having a brief stint as a comic book artist, Mike found it necessary to pursue an alternative path, or as his parents would say, “Plan B,” by establishing his own business.
Due to the need to sacrifice much of his artistic aspirations and the pandemic negatively impacting Mike’s World Comics, he was forced to make significant changes in the store, including letting go of his top employee and dearest friend, Alex. Although it seems that Mike’s dreams are out of reach, he longs to get back to his first love – art. That is until they encounter Brandon. Together, the trio not only help each other but also discover their dreams once more.
Review:
I found myself pleasantly caught off guard by “The Comic Shop,” written by Jonathan L. Bowen and Scott Reed. Contrary to my initial assumptions, it wasn’t the typical slapstick comedy akin to “Mallrats” that I had anticipated. Instead, it offered something unique and captivating.
According to the summary, Mike (portrayed by Jesse Metcalf) is a struggling proprietor of Mike’s World Comics. Originally, Mike aspired to become a comic illustrator, but life intervened, leading him to open the shop instead. After the global pandemic, financial burdens have mounted, and Mike copes with stress and the disappointment of selling comics rather than creating them by drinking regularly.
In the role of the charming Tristan Mays, we find Alex – a dedicated employee of Mike’s, whose passion for comics runs deep. She places her trust in Mike, and it is she who ensures the cohesion of his comic book store, even as he turns to drink for solace.
The Comic Shop can be described as a blend of dramatic and humorous scenes. A certain emotion lingered during my observation that I couldn’t quite grasp until it dawned on me – it reminded me of “The Bad News Bears.” The dynamic between Brandon, portrayed by Micah Giovanni, and Mike’s shop is somewhat similar to the bond between Walter Matthau’s Buttermaker and Tatum O’Neal’s Amanda. When Brandon enters town and stumbles upon Mike’s store, there’s a hint of the same connection as seen in the film. Brandon’s father is a stern, military figure who struggles to comprehend his son’s passion for comics, which often leads him to spend time at the shop with Mike and Alex.
In an unfortunate turn of events for Mike, a contemporary comic store called “Wild Imagination” opens in town, surpassing his own store, Mike’s World Comics, in size and modernity. This situation leaves Mike under increased pressure, causing him to become somewhat distant towards his customers, including Brandon initially. As he comes to terms with the need to reinvent his business, he decides to focus on independent comics to stay competitive. Brandon aspires to be an illustrator, and upon seeing Mike’s artwork displayed in the store, they reach a mutual agreement to aid one another. Mike offers to teach Brandon drawing skills, while Brandon takes on the task of creating a website for Mike’s store that rivals Wild Imagination.
In that moment, I found myself struck by the depth of emotions stirred within me by “The Comic Shop”. Just like how “The Bad News Bears” surprised me with its heart, this little gem did too. Despite delving into the pressing matters faced by comic shops today, such as making cash-strapped owners purchase unnecessary products to profit from variant covers, “The Comic Shop” is essentially a tale about pursuing dreams.
Throughout the movie, it’s evident that Mike, an exceptionally skilled and innovative artist, opted for a less challenging path. This is subtly hinted at throughout the film, with many people, including customers, friends, and fellow comic creators, acknowledging his talent. Interestingly, Brandon also shows raw but significant talent. When Mike perceives similar circumstances that led him to choose an alternate career path threatening Brandon, he decides to mentor him. It’s delightful watching their friendship grow as they share a mutual passion for comics and creating fresh ideas. Brandon’s energy and zest rekindle Mike’s long-lost passion for illustration, causing him to contemplate his choices once more.
As a writer, who had long nurtured dreams of penning novels, but found my true calling during the pandemic, the idea of pursuing passions struck a chord. The Comic Shop provides an insightful portrayal of the challenges faced by today’s comic shop owners, while at the same time serving as a gentle nudge to dust off that guitar or sketchbook and give your dreams another try.
