The Brutalist Director Says He Made ‘Zero’ Money From the Oscar-Nominated Movie

2024’s “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet, has been recognized for its merits during awards season. However, despite these accolades, Corbet shared that the film did not generate any income for him. This period drama focuses on Adrien Brody’s character, László Tóth, a Hungarian architect who, with his wife, attempts to escape Europe ravaged by war and establish themselves in the United States.

So far, the movie has garnered 10 Oscar nominations, as well as recognition at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Yet, according to Corbet, it doesn’t generate the usual financial returns typically linked with such a process.

During his interview on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Corbet admitted that he didn’t receive any money from his latest directing project. Although The Brutalist has been nominated for numerous Oscar categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and others, it’s worth noting that its director hasn’t received any earnings from the film. This is not unique to The Brutalist, as director Corbet mentioned that many other Oscar-nominated filmmakers are also struggling financially, with some even finding it difficult to pay their rent.

The movie released in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2024.
