As an ardent reader who’s traversed the literary landscape for decades, I must confess that Emma Lord’s transition from YA to adult romance was as unexpected as a pop-up ad during a Netflix binge. Yet, here we are, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!
It’s true that the pathway from young adult (YA) literature to romance writing can be genuine, and I must admit, I wasn’t expecting it from Emma Lord. Still, her novel, “The Break-Up Pact,” left me pleasantly surprised and eager to read it.
I first learned about this book several months back, marking it as a perfect choice for my summer reading list. Given its captivating cover, I’m certain you understand my enthusiasm to dive into it!
With its entertaining storyline, I found it effortless to include The Break-Up Pact on my reading list, given that I’m a fan of Emma Lord’s writing style. I had high expectations for this book, and I’m quite confident I’ll find it enjoyable.
Regardless if you’re already familiar with Emma Lord or discovered her through her Young Adult novels, make sure to include “The Break-Up Pact” in your reading list for this summer.
The Break-Up Pact is a fun yet emotional adult romance from Emma Lord.
The narrative opens with June, recently single after a decade-long relationship and finding herself an internet sensation due to her ex’s appearances on reality TV. She’s also facing difficulties in managing The Tea Tide, a business that seems to be slacking. However, the situation takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Levi, an old friend who also went through a public breakup with his fiancĂ©e.
It’s quite clear where this tale is headed. Levi and June decide to pretend to date, with June needing the ruse to save her business and Levi wanting to provoke his ex. However, as time passes, feelings from the past resurface, and there’s an unmistakable bond between them. Contrary to expectations, this novel by Emma Lord doesn’t just follow typical fake dating tropes; instead, it takes readers on a thrilling emotional journey.
In “The Break-Up Pact,” the central romance between June and Levi takes center stage, but the book also explores their unique bond with Annie, June’s sister and Levi’s best friend who tragically passed away due to a brain aneurysm. Both characters are grappling with the aftermath of her death in their own ways, which has significantly affected their lives. The novel can be quite emotional at times, so for those experiencing grief, it might be advisable to pause reading until you feel ready.
Beyond the emotional turmoil depicted in these chapters, the narrative also delves deeply into the realms of social media, viral sensations, and managing their consequences. If you’re drawn to soap operas, reality shows, or TikTok trends, then “The Break-Up Pact” is tailor-made for you. Essentially, this book offers a delightful read that shares strong similarities with Lord’s Young Adult novels, making it an excellent bridge if you’re seeking something more from her portfolio.
In essence, I found it troubling in the novel ‘The Break-Up Pact‘ that June and Levi seemed to dodge deep or challenging discussions. Instead of facing their issues head-on through conversation, they often avoided doing so. This pattern irritated me significantly. Despite this flaw, I believe Emma Lord’s debut into adult romance literature is promising and a solid foundation for future works.
The Break-Up Pact by Emma Lord is out now where books are sold.
