As a die-hard fan of The Boys and a pop culture enthusiast, I can’t help but be thrilled by the show’s latest nod to real-world events in its fourth season finale. This time, they tackled the controversial cancellation of DC’s Batgirl film, and they did it with their signature wit and satire.
Amazon Prime Video’s show “The Boys” is recognized for poking fun at political and pop culture occurrences through satire. In the final episode of Season 4, it maintains this trend with a hidden reference in Episode 8 that jests DC’s decision to abandon the Batgirl movie production.
The Boys Season 4 finale jokes about DC’s Batgirl movie cancellation
In the beginning of The Boys Season 4 finale, the show playfully mocks the scrapped Batgirl film from DC. During episode 4, a news segment on VNN Today breaks the story that Vought Studios has unexpectedly dropped “the highly anticipated production” of Training A-Train, despite it being already completed.
In the same style of The Blind Side, this fictional biography features Supe, portrayed by himself, and Will Ferrell in the cast. Ashley Barrett comes onto the screen to share that they discovered a better financial opportunity through a tax write-off.
I’ve seen my fair share of film projects that didn’t quite make it to the big screen despite being well into production. But the recent news about Warner Bros. deciding against releasing Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Batgirl, even though it was already in post-production, truly hits close to home.
An article in Variety suggested that the cancellation of Batgirl may have been due to the studio’s decision to forgo releasing the film, instead opting to gain a tax break by writing off the production costs. With an initial budget of $70-75 million, which had grown to $90 million during post-production, the studio allegedly found it more profitable not to release Batgirl on HBO Max as planned.
In the start of The Boys Season 4 finale, there’s a humorous nod to the situation leading up to the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, interwoven with references back to the show’s previous season. When Adam Bourke, the director of A-Train’s training sessions, hears about the cancellation, he appeals to fans via social media, urging them to continuously watch the trailer in the hope that Vought will once again approve #RELEASETHEBOURKECUT.
