The Boys Actor Says James Bond Audition Was ‘Not Very Good’

Antony Starr might have taken a different career route if not for his unsuccessful James Bond audition. The New Zealand actor, now well-known for playing Homelander in “The Boys”, could have been 007 instead, but that opportunity slipped away from him. His attempt to secure the role went awry years ago, and it’s recently resurfaced as Amazon MGM looks for someone to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. Starr has since reminisced about his botched audition, even going so far as to describe it as one of the worst portrayals of the character ever.

The Boys’ Antony Star reflects on his failed James Bond audition

During a recent conversation, Anthony Starr reminisced about his audition for the iconic undercover agent role in films from 2005. Despite his less-than-favorable comments regarding his mechanical portrayal of James Bond at that time, he acknowledged that everyone needs a starting point in their careers.

In conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Starr explained, “I compared that situation to casting a hook without bait into a big lake, understanding you won’t catch any fish. I’ve witnessed it myself, and that was when Daniel Craig was struggling.

Starr explained, “They were sweeping up the entire world, and I was just a small fish swimming around, unluckily entangled in their net. It felt quite strange.” Continuing, Starr said, “It happened suddenly, and I found myself participating in that event. It’s not particularly impressive, but it mirrors my state at the time.

Despite his outspoken criticism about his James Bond audition, it appears that Starr, famously known for his role as Homelander in The Boys series, has moved past the unsuccessful attempt. He stated, “To be honest, it doesn’t really bother me. I mean, we all have to start somewhere, so it is what it is. It was likely one of the worst deliveries of ‘Bond. James Bond’ you’ll ever hear.

When asked if he might revisit the role, Starr hinted that his time on the Banshee series had shown him the demanding nature of those fight scenes. Consequently, he implied he wouldn’t take it up again, saying, “I have a sense of what’s involved, and it’s quite a lot. It’s exhausting. That kind of work is better suited for someone younger than me.
