As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in The Walking Dead universe, I must say that the premiere of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Carol Peletier fans like myself. Melissa McBride’s return to the screen was a much-anticipated event, and she did not disappoint!
On September 29th, AMC launched the second season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” titled “The Book of Carol.” This season saw the comeback of Melissa McBride, who has played Carol Peletier since 2010. Following the end of the primary series, McBride took a well-earned break; however, the opening episode demonstrates that Carol is once again in the thick of things!
Approach with caution, as the following content reveals plot points from episode 201 titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – Carol’s Journal.
In the initial episode, titled “The Kindness of Strangers,” Carol swiftly demonstrated her tough persona, leaving no doubt about it among viewers. She physically confronted the men at the work camp, a familiar place for Daryl before being transported to France in a ship until she obtained the crucial information. Moreover, Carol deceived Ash, a mourning father, regarding her daughter residing in France, with the intention of recruiting his assistance in locating Daryl.
However, an unexpected turn of events stirred the emotions of Carol’s followers. Upon encountering Ash, he extends an invitation for her to reside in his barn. This triggers a flashback in Carol’s memory, recalling her daughter Sophia (Madison Lintz) exiting Hershel’s barn from season 2 of the primary series. This particular scene is often cited by fans as the moment they realized The Walking Dead was not just an ordinary “zombie” show. Not only did Carol have to bear witness to her daughter in a reanimated state, but she also had to watch as Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was forced to euthanize her.
The television show “The Walking Dead” started off with the demise of a child zombie, affectionately known as Teddy Bear girl, whom Rick initially encountered. In the second season, viewers grew attached to Sophia, and when her fate was left uncertain, many expected she wouldn’t survive. However, an unexpected twist came when we saw Sophia transformed into one of the walkers confined in Hershel’s barn.
In the creation of Daryl Dixon’s storyline, there was a flashback scene reenacted using a character named Sophia, remarkably similar to the original. Instead of Carol being embraced by Daryl as seen in season 2, she observed as Sophia approached and touched her arm during this improvised moment on set. The episode was masterfully directed by Greg Nicotero, who had previously worked on season 2, and he spoke about this creative choice with Entertainment Weekly.
“At one point, we did one of the takes, and as the girl got closer and closer, I said to myself: What’s really interesting is in our new version, Rick isn’t there to walk up and pull the trigger. So what happens if Rick’s not there? Sophia keeps coming forward. And what does Carol really want? She wants to be able to touch her daughter again. She wants to be able to interact with her. So we did a version where this little Sophia touches Carol’s arm, and she looks down as if it’s almost like that’s all she really needs. And then she’s dramatically pulled out of that hallucination.”
In the recent episode, Carol was reminded of an old emotion when she saw a flower on Ash’s table that resembled the Cherokee Rose Daryl had given her as a tribute to Sophia in season 2’s “Cherokee Rose” episode. This second emotional memory was triggered.
These recollections are deeply emotional yet serve as motivation for Sophia’s journey to reconnect with Daryl, who has played a significant role in her life for more than ten years. Although Sophia is no longer here, Daryl is believed to be still alive, and Sophia is determined to take any action necessary to find him again.
The upcoming second episode titled “Moulin Rouge” from the series “Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol” is set to air on both AMC and AMC+ starting October 6.
