Set within the chaotic Living Lands, an island steeped in antiquity, currently under siege by both the Steel Garotte and the Dreamscourge. The narrative weaves through various intricate plots, sometimes challenging our conventional understanding. There are indeed elements of the world and story that may seem illogical at times.
Absolutely, immersive open-world, high-fantasy games challenge our logical thinking, but sometimes events or plot points just don’t fit seamlessly or create gaps in the narrative. In this piece, we will explore the elements in Avowed that seem utterly incongruous.

Stealing Food During A Famine
Upon entering Emerald Stair, it becomes evident that this area is grappling with a severe food shortage. Strangely, though, if you manage to obtain food in the rural farming communities or the city of Fior mes Iverno, people remain silent and do not utter a word about it.
Despite Galawain’s Tusks experiencing a food scarcity, there seem to be no repercussions for taking food. It’s puzzling that nobody seems to challenge the Envoy openly stealing food, given that most people have a low opinion of the Aedyrans.

Drawing Your Weapon In A City Without Consequence

Despite the reputation of the Living Lands as being lawless, there are undoubtedly certain guidelines that govern their three primary cities. For instance, it’s advisable not to brandish your weapon without cause when in proximity to civilians or city guards. However, the Envoy seems to face no repercussions for doing so.
It might seem odd for someone to carry a sword or wand in public without any apparent threats nearby, and yet no one seems to react. Given your status as an Imperial Envoy, you do have certain allowances, but considering the tense relations between Aedyr and the locals, it would make sense to adhere to basic safety protocols.
5.
No Life-Changing Quests With Yatzli And Giatta
While Kai and Marius both received intricate sub-quests enhancing their characters, it’s interesting to note that Giatta and Yatzli don’t have any such tasks. It seems surprising given Giatta’s heartrending past of losing her parents, one might expect a compelling companion quest to delve deeper into her character. However, her character growth is primarily explored when we reach the Garden, where our actions regarding Sapadal become crucial.
Yatzli has an impressive capacity to offer an engaging side quest; however, her character growth remains relatively unexplored. The narrative doesn’t provide a clear rationale as to why her storylines didn’t reach their full potential like those of your initial two companions. This aspect was a significant plot hole that wasn’t effectively addressed in the game.
4.
Why You’re Allowed Into Thirdborn If You Go With Ryngrim’s Plan
Towards the culmination of Shatterscarp’s primary storyline, you’re faced with two options: aligning with Lodwyn or Ryngrim regarding the Dreamscourge. Choosing Ryngrim’s approach appears more feasible initially, but it carries a significant downside: a considerable chunk of the populace could perish as an immediate consequence.
To put it simply, Temerti, the ruler of Thirdborn, accuses you of causing numerous deaths within their city and declares you no longer allowed there. One might assume this means a permanent ban from Thirdborn. Yet, surprisingly, you can still enter Thirdborn, and its citizens, particularly merchants, don’t seem to shun you, which is puzzling given that you were responsible for decimating the population of Shatterscarp.

Somehow Animancy Works In The Tusks
Previously discussed was the predicament of Emerald Stair, who were once self-sufficient in food production due to their use of animancy, but now grappling with famine as these methods have proven unsuccessful. It’s believed that the Dreamscourge may be the cause of this failure, yet in Galawain’s Tusks, we come across a Warden who has been experimenting with animancy to cultivate food for his community.
It’s intriguing to see that, according to his records, his attempts have shown some level of success. Yet, it raises a question: Why do these animancy farming techniques yield results in the Tusks yet fail in Emerald Stair, given that both areas are affected by the Dreamscourge?
2.
The Garden’s Location Is Pretty Obvious

As a gamer, I found myself questioning the whereabouts of the Garden while exploring Dawnshore, Emerald Stair, and Shatterscarp. However, it became increasingly puzzling when my character and companions persisted in their search for its location even after I’d stepped into the final biome, as I was able to easily pinpoint its whereabouts right then and there.
The aurora matching the location of the Garden is striking, making it hard to believe that the group can’t spot it. Since inhabitants of the Tusks are considering allowing Aedyran merchants into their land, they must have observed it too and thus spared the Envoy from unnecessary hassle. Instead, our efforts should be directed towards finding a means into the Garden, but perhaps the story would not have been as captivating if we had done so earlier.

The Envoy Deciding The Fate Of The Living Lands
Throughout the tale, the Envoy has been the one to make significant decisions for every part of the Living Lands. Even though he is the emissary of the Aedyran Emperor and a key figure in the narrative, it feels unsettling that the final decision about the island’s fate should be left to him alone.
Indeed, opting to transform the island into an Aedyran colony or vassal state aligns with their duty as a servant of Aedyr. However, advocating for a unified Living Lands could potentially brand the Envoy as a traitor. Notably, the Envoy was dispatched primarily to examine the Dreamscourge, and any deliberations regarding the island’s future would have ideally been handled with the Emperor.
If the Envoy were to pick any of the three options, it could be seen as a form of disobedience on their part. The third option, complete independence, might provoke a stronger, more aggressive reaction from the Aedyran Empire, given that empires in history have often responded forcefully to such challenges. After all, history shows us that empires rarely stand still when faced with defiance.
