As a dedicated gamer and movie enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of thrillers that leave me on the edge of my seat. But amongst all the suspenseful films I’ve watched, Jennifer Lopez‘s “The Boy Next Door” stands out as one of the best erotic thrillers I’ve ever experienced.
Jennifer Lopez, a celebrated singer and actress with a devoted fanbase, has made a name for herself in beloved romantic comedies such as “The Wedding Planner,” “Maid in Manhattan,” “Shall We Dance?”, “Monster-in-Law,” and “Marry Me.” Yet, her talent extends beyond the romantic genre. In fact, recently a suspenseful film featuring her acting has been released on Netflix – it’s called “The Boy Next Door“. Many believe this may be her finest thriller performance yet.
The Boy Next Door is described as an erotic thriller film. It was helmed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, XXX) from a screenplay written by Barbara Curry (Interrogation). The plot centers around an illicit affair that spirals out of control between a high school literature teacher and a 19-year-old boy.
Lopez portrays Claire Peterson, a dedicated high school teacher going through a divorce from her unfaithful husband. One day, she encounters charismatic 19-year-old neighbor Noah Sandborn (Guzman), who’s moved in with his disabled uncle. Over time, Noah forms bonds with Claire’s son and lends a hand around the house. Initially, their relationship remains platonic. However, as Claire experiences emotional vulnerability, she finds herself drawn to Noah in a more intimate way, ultimately leading to a surprise romantic encounter.
Although Claire feels remorseful about their one-night stand the morning after, she attempts to end things with Noah. However, this decision infuriates him, leading Claire to uncover his volatile and unstable personality. As Noah grows more menacing and threatening, Claire becomes terrified not just for her own safety but also for those dear to her. She is now compelled to take decisive actions to shield herself and her loved ones before the situation escalates further.
In addition to “The Boy Next Door,” Guzman has appeared in various films including “Step Up Revolution,” “Step Up: All In,” and “Jem and the Holograms.” He also took on roles in television shows like “Pretty Little Liars” as Jake, “Heroes Reborn” as Carlos Gutierrez, and “9-1-1” as Eddie Diaz. The cast of “The Boy Next Door” consists of Jennifer Lopez, Guzman, John Corbett, Ian Nelson, Kristin Chenoweth, Lexi Atkins, Hill Harper, Jack Wallace, Travis Schuldt, and others.

Despite earning unfavorable evaluations from critics upon its January 2015 cinema debut, this film proved to be financially successful, generating $53.4 million in revenue with a modest production cost of $4 million. Although the critical pans may discourage some viewers, I encourage you to give it a try and form your own opinion. You never know – you might surprise yourself by enjoying it.
The Boy Next Door is now available to stream on Netflix. Will you be watching the erotic thriller?
