The Bachelorette wastes our time with Jenn Tran's ex-boyfriend Matt

As a long-time viewer of The Bachelorette, I must say that this season 21 episode 5 left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed, much like a flat soda after an exciting rollercoaster ride. Matt’s appearance was indeed a curveball, but it seemed more like a stunt than a genuine attempt at rekindling a relationship.

Spoilers ahead for The Bachelorette season 21 episode 5

The fourth episode of Jenn Tran’s run on The Bachelorette ended with a suspenseful moment. Her former boyfriend, Matt, traveled to Auckland hoping to rekindle their relationship.

As a fan, I’d put it this way: Jenn made it clear that Matt wasn’t an old flame who left her with a pile of unresolved issues from their past relationship. Instead, they had transitioned into friends after going their separate ways. So when she learned he was interested in rekindling things, it took her by surprise. In order to sort out my feelings and make the best decision for myself, I decided to take some time to ponder whether Matt should be a potential suitor on the show.

She made it clear to the suitors fighting for her affections that she was giving the decision careful thought. Mostly, they weren’t pleased about Devin potentially leaving, especially if she decided to give Matt a chance to win her back. It’s worth mentioning that these men didn’t realize that Devin wasn’t one of the harmful individuals from her past. Had they known this, their response might not have been as intense as it was.

Jenn certainly pondered about her actions, yet the show seemed to devote less focus on Matt. He appeared in his suit, conversed briefly with Jenn, and then left just as swiftly as he had arrived. It gave an impression of being more of a spectacle rather than a substantial scene – a common occurrence in reality dating shows, I must admit. However, it still seemed like an unnecessary distraction from the main storyline.

If Matt’s screen time during the season was less than 15 minutes in total, it seems questionable why he was included at all, since his presence didn’t reveal anything new about Jenn’s readiness to progress in life or any significant connection between them that wasn’t already apparent. While his brief appearance might have demonstrated Jenn’s willingness to move forward for the suitors, we had already understood this aspect of her character. Moreover, Matt did not appear to be a particularly meaningful love interest for Jenn during the show.

The situation turned out to be underwhelming, which is disappointing as it had the potential to add excitement to this season beyond Devin’s continuous interactions with most other suitors. Moreover, it would have been intriguing to observe how Jenn’s stint on The Bachelorette might have evolved if she encountered an ex. Regrettably, that didn’t materialize. However, it’s important to note that this is acceptable; it’s simply that the build-up of Matt in the promotions suggested substantial tension, and the absence of it felt like releasing air from a balloon.
