James Gunn, who’s leading the charge alongside his partner Peter Safran, recently announced a release date for an upcoming movie that’s been somewhat off the fan radar – “The Authority“. Mark your calendars for July 11, 2025, as that’s when we’ll finally get to witness the first cinematic entry in this franchise: Superman!
James Gunn says The Authority is still happening, but moving slowly
In a recent chat with Blavity TV, filmmaker Gunn discussed the upcoming DCU project, “The Authority.” He shared that the movie is indeed in progress, albeit not moving along at a particularly swift pace at the moment.
Gunn discussed using María Gabriela de Faría’s character, Angela Spica/The Engineer (a member of The Authority from DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint) in the initial Superman film. When asked about his experience working with this character, Gunn stated that he found her powers appealing and thought it would be interesting to incorporate aspects of The Authority’s story into Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, thereby merging the DC and Wildstorm characters within the DC Universe. He further explained that her power set seemed suitable for battling Superman.
The interviewer inquired if DC Studios was still considering The Authority project and if de Faría might return to her role in it. To this, Gunn replied with a positive affirmation: “Possibly, yes. It’s a possibility.” Later, he added that while progress isn’t swift at the moment, there is definitely potential for it to come to fruition.
Initially announced as part of DCU’s launch lineup in January 2023, The Authority project has encountered challenges unlike other projects from the same announcement. As stated by Gunn in February 2025, the project has been experiencing delays in development. (Based on Variety)
As of writing this piece, there is no set release date from The Authority. However, it’s likely that we can expect its arrival some time beyond the year 2027.
