With its unique blend of high-stakes heists, heart-pounding surgeries, and a dash of Australian wit, this show has become an unforgettable part of my TV rotation.
The Artful Dodger Season 2 has been greenlit at Disney+ and Hulu.
In Season 2, Thomas Brodie-Sangster reappears playing the lead role of Jack Dawkins, while David Thewlis returns to portray Norbert Fagin and Maia Mitchell continues her character, Lady Belle Fox.
What to expect in The Artful Dodger Season 2?
In the second season of “The Artful Dodger,” we’ll continue the story from where Dodger, Fagin, and Lady Belle’s heartfelt aspirations ended, offering more clever heists, quick wit, suspenseful operations, and a love story with an unexpected turn. Filming for Season 2 will commence in 2025 at Callan Park in Sydney.
Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand, stated that the comeback of our Australian-made Disney+ Original series, featuring an A-list cast and talented team, showcases the exceptional quality of its production and its ability to captivate both local and global viewers. “We’re ecstatic that this suspenseful romantic drama with elements of heists, humor, and intricate human relationships will once again captivate and amuse audiences,” she added.
The Artful Dodger is a follow-up story to Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, and it was developed by James McNamara, David Maher, and David Taylor. In the upcoming season 2, James McNamara will team up with Kate Mulvany, Dan Knight, and Miranda Tapsell as writers. The directors for this new season are Ben Young and Gracie Otto, and Jeffrey Walker provides consultation.
Disney+ and Hulu will co-produce Season 2 with Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures.
In 1850s Australia, located in the bustling settlement of Port Victory, Jack Dawkins is known as The Artful Dodger. His swift fingers, once used for pickpocketing, have transformed into skilled surgical hands. This is the basic plot summary for Season 1. As Fagin, an old companion from his criminal past, reappears to draw him back into a life of crime, Dodger faces a more personal threat – Lady Belle, the Governor’s daughter, who aspires to become the colony’s first female surgeon. The series explores a variety of themes, including heists, critical operations, and the complex interplay between the criminal underworld, the middle class, and the gentry.
I was absolutely thrilled when The Artful Dodger’s first season made its debut in November 2023! In Australia, it graced our screens on Disney+, while my friends across the Pacific could enjoy it on Hulu in the United States.
