What is The Apprentice about?

1970s New York City: Eager to step out of the long shadow cast by his influential father and establish a reputation in Manhattan real estate, up-and-coming businessman Donald J. Trump begins his journey early in his career when he meets Roy Cohn, an attorney who would significantly impact his life. Recognizing potential in the young man, Cohn – known for securing convictions against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and working alongside Senator Joseph McCarthy to uncover suspected Communists – instructs Trump on how to build wealth and power by employing deceit, intimidation, and manipulation of the media. The events that follow would become a significant part of history.

This movie is helmed by Ali Abbasi, who has previously worked on films such as Shelley (2016), Border (2018), and Holy Spider (2022). In addition to the already-mentioned actors, it also features Martin Donovan, Ben Sullivan, Charlie Carrick, Mark Rendall, and Joe Pingue.

According to reports, filming for The Apprentice, penned by Gabriel Sherman, concluded in January 2024. Later that year, it was exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival, and more recently, it was displayed at the Telluride Film Festival as well.

As a passionate moviegoer, I found myself eagerly anticipating this critically acclaimed film, but its journey to the big screen was far from smooth. Despite garnering positive reviews, it faced challenges securing a domestic distributor due to its provocative theme and pressure exerted by Trump’s legal team aiming to halt its release. However, in August 2024, Briarcliff Entertainment bravely stepped up and acquired the distribution rights, ensuring that this important story would finally reach audiences.

On October 11, 2024, “The Apprentice” is set to be screened in U.S. cinemas, courtesy of Briarcliffe Entertainment.
