Online, the initial responses to the recently released Alto Knights crime drama by Robert De Niro are starting to appear, and it seems that opinions are largely split, with many reviews showing a mix of positive and negative feedback.
What are The Alto Knights reviews saying?
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film “The Alto Knights” presently holds a rating of 38%, based on 32 reviews that have been submitted so far. Generally, viewers find the movie unremarkable and lacking in originality.
As a gamer, I’d say it went like this: “I was blown away by my character’s impressive performance – a masterful display of over-the-top stereotypes and outdated slang that felt like I was diving deep into the worn-out Mafia handbook.
According to Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter, Robert De Niro has the ability to manage the challenging task of portraying two characters. However, the concept behind the film is so “gimmicky” that it weakens the movie’s intended gravitas or weightiness.
While not all reviews were favorable, Variety’s Peter Debruge offered a positive perspective, commending Robert De Niro’s “greatness.” He pointed out that the doubts regarding De Niro’s exceptional talent were dispelled in his face-to-face encounters. No other star could have matched De Niro’s performance as effectively during these confrontations.
The movie traces the rivalry between two powerful crime lords, Frank Costello (played by De Niro) and Vito Genovese (also played by De Niro), who were once close friends in New York. Their friendship is tested by minor grudges and a chain of deceptions, leading them towards an inevitable and fateful conflict that will indelibly alter the Mafia and America as we know it.
In the movie, De Niro portrays both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. The cast also features Debra Messing, Kathrine Narducci, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Rispoli, Michael Adler, Ed Amatrudo, Joe Bacino, Anthony J. Gallo, Wallace Langham, Louis Mustillo, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto, and Robert Uricola (“Raging Bull”).
Or in a more conversational tone:
De Niro takes on dual roles as both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in the film. The cast also includes Debra Messing, Kathrine Narducci, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Rispoli, Michael Adler, Ed Amatrudo, Joe Bacino, Anthony J. Gallo, Wallace Langham, Louis Mustillo, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto, and Robert Uricola, who were part of the “Raging Bull” cast.
In writing the screenplay for the film, Nicholas Pileggi took on the role of the writer, whereas Irwin Winkler, Jason Sosnoff, Levinson, Charles Winkler, and David Winkler acted as the producers, with Mike Drake serving in the capacity of executive producer.
In U.S. theaters on March 21, 2025, “The Alto Knights” will premiere, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
