As a dedicated fan of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that Season 4 has certainly kept me on my toes! The unexpected romance between Five and Lila is one of the most intriguing twists this season has offered. However, as someone who’s seen all the episodes multiple times, I can’t help but question the wisdom behind their pairing.
In the fourth season of “The Umbrella Academy,” we find ourselves six years later since the events of the previous finale. The Hargreeves siblings are navigating life without their superpowers. But, right when the narrative begins to unfold, an unexpected twist occurs – the siblings’ powers mysteriously return.
Absolutely, amidst the larger danger, there were indeed some individual narratives unfolding. One such tale took us by surprise – it centered around Five and Lila.
Although she was with Diego, Lila found herself growing tired of her everyday life. She frequented a “book club,” though it was more like a gathering of individuals exploring alternative timelines that didn’t occur in reality. Meanwhile, Five was engaged with the CIA. Eventually, their paths crossed and they teamed up, leading to them becoming romantically involved.
There isn’t actually an age gap between Five and Lila in The Umbrella Academy
Many fans are focused on the age gap between Five and Lila, but that age gap isn’t actually there. At least, not the way that fans suspect. People are focused on the fact that Five is still much younger looking than the rest of his siblings.
In Season 1, he appeared as a 13-year-old character. Now, as the actors involved, he’s 19 years old, while Lila is in her mid-thirties. Interestingly, there’s an age difference between the actors, which adds a somewhat awkward dynamic during filming.
To clarify, Five seems younger than his actual age due to spending many years in an apocalyptic world and working for the Time Authority. In reality, he is 58 years old, which might make the age difference puzzling, yet it’s him who is older in this scenario.
Five and Lila have a long, disturbing history in The Umbrella Academy
In another perspective, there are numerous factors making their relationship problematic. To begin with, it’s crucial to note that Five is responsible for the death of Lila’s parents during her childhood. Lila was subsequently brought up by The Handler, who unfortunately subjected Five to sexual harassment. Remarkably, Lila never took a stance for Five, consistently aligning herself with her adoptive mother instead.
Despite appearing like siblings due to their upbringing and entry into The Handler’s world, there’s an unexpected familial bond: Five is Lila’s brother-in-law. However, his actions in this relationship amount to a betrayal, not just of any man, but his own brother. This kind of deception goes against the character we’ve come to know, making his development seem inconsistent. Unlike Ben, who is an alternate version of our familiar character, Five’s actions don’t align with what we expect from him.
Instead, let’s discuss why Five, throughout the series, appears indifferent towards actual women. His devotion, however, was to Delores, the mannequin, whom he ultimately had to part ways with.
The primary issue wasn’t the age difference; rather, the entire dynamic between them was problematic and unsuitable.
