As a long-time Star Wars fan with countless hours spent in the galaxy far, far away, hearing about the cancellation of The Acolyte feels like a punch to the lightsaber. Manny Jacinto’s revelations at Fan Expo paint a picture of what could have been an epic trilogy that delved deeper into the High Republic era.
Manny Jacinto, famously known as Qimir from Star Wars series, recently revealed details about the initial concept of “The Acolyte” during a Fan Expo discussion. Leslye Headland, the showrunner, had grand plans for the show, intending to span across three seasons and a movie. Unfortunately, the cancellation of the series prematurely ended numerous storylines and prospects for growth that Jacinto mentioned. His revelations offer a glimpse into what might have been for this High Republic-era production.
Manny Jacinto reveals Star Wars: The Acolyte’s three season plans before cancellation
At a Fan Expo panel hosted by Maggie Lovitt of Collider, Manny Jacinto (Qimir in The Acolyte) revealed that the showrunner, Leslye Headland, has a broad and detailed vision for the upcoming Star Wars series.
Jacinto shared that Leslye’s initial vision was for us to complete three seasons instead of just one. However, he mentioned that having an end to things after a certain number of episodes can make the experience even more unique and memorable. Although he isn’t sure if he would do it, he believes that three seasons and a movie could have been extraordinary, as there was so much untapped potential in the second season.
The Acolyte was introduced during summertime, signifying the initial Star Wars venture set within the High Republic period, which is a century prior to The Phantom Menace. The series received positive reviews from critics, but unfortunately, Disney decided not to continue it after just one season. Alan Bergman, one of Disney Entertainment’s co-chairmen, attributed the cancellation to the production cost of the show, which exceeded $230 million for eight episodes.
Jacinto shared that Season 2 would have delved deeper into plotlines established in the first season, such as the enigma of Darth Plagueis, who made a brief appearance at the end of the finale. If given the chance, Darth Plagueis was undeniably going to be a significant aspect of the storyline for Season 2, according to Jacinto. Other topics, like the relationships between Qimir and Osha and a potential appearance by Yoda, were left hanging after the cancellation.
In the realm of Star Wars, The Acolyte delved into a fresh epoch, enriching the galaxy far, far away with unexplored tales. Regrettably, its premature conclusion leaves numerous narratives incomplete. Materials related to The High Republic are found in official Star Wars publications. As for on-screen projects set during this era, their future is uncertain. For fans eager to delve back into the untouched corners of Star Wars history, The Acolyte can be revisited on Disney+.
