In an unexpected turn of events, the re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith overshadowed predictions by outperforming The Accountant 2 at the box office. Meanwhile, the horror movie starring Michael B. Jordan maintained its record-breaking streak. However, the renewed interest in Star Wars caused a shift in the weekend rankings as it surged past initial forecasts.
Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith rerelease beats The Accountant 2 at box office
During its initial release over the weekend, Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, marking its 20th anniversary, grossed $25.2 million across 2,775 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
In simpler terms, the re-release of this movie earned more than The Accountant 2 by Amazon MGM Studios, which made $24.4 million in its initial run across 3,610 theaters. This re-release became the second highest opening for a Star Wars film in the 4DX format, raking in $775,000 with an average of $15,000 per screen (as reported by Deadline).
Based on studio statistics, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith exceeded predictions by earning more than the 1997 re-release of Return of the Jedi, which debuted with $16.2 million, and is anticipated to surpass The Empire Strikes Back’s re-release opening of $21.9 million. The movie attracted a significant audience from the age group of 18-34, accounting for 74% of its viewers. The regions with the highest attendance were the Midwest, Mountain, and Western parts of the United States.
In its initial release, The Accountant 2 didn’t quite match the strong opening of its 2016 predecessor, which earned $24.7 million. Featuring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, this movie was rated an A- by CinemaScore and had a 68% rating of “definitely recommend” on PostTrak.
On Fridays, our earnings soared to an impressive $9.4 million, with our premium large format (PLF) screens accounting for nearly 38% of the weekend’s gross revenue. Our marketing strategy for Amazon MGM was quite extensive, ranging from a premiere at SXSW, more than 125 word-of-mouth screenings, and strategic partnerships with Airstream and Amazon.com for promotions. As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the success of our films!
In its second week, the film Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan and helmed by Ryan Coogler, reigned supreme at the weekend box office, earning an impressive $45 million. The movie’s domestic earnings now amount to a staggering $122.5 million. Meanwhile, a Minecraft Movie from Warner Bros brought in $22.7 million during its fourth week. Sony’s Until Dawn debuted with $8 million. Collectively, the domestic box office for the weekend reached an impressive $146 million—the strongest final April frame since the start of the pandemic.
