As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel my heart racing with anticipation for the upcoming sequel to Thanksgiving! Having grown up on classics like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and the original slasher flicks, it’s always a thrill to see a new entry in this genre that promises to deliver the chills and spills we crave.
As we’re gearing up for the pre-production phase of Thanksgiving 2, scheduled to begin in late March of next year, director Eli Roth hints that the follow-up to our beloved slasher film is set to reach unprecedented heights.
The script for “Thanksgiving 2” has already been penned down, and production is scheduled to start in March 2025. Once again, both Roth and screenwriter Jeff Rendell are back on board for the sequel’s script. Roth will also be directing the film this time around.
What did Eli Roth say about Thanksgiving 2?
In an interview with IndieWire, the director – renowned for his films like Cabin Fever, the Hostel series, The Green Inferno, and Borderlands – expressed that he’s approaching the second movie as if it were his final project. However, he intends to surpass his previous achievements in Thanksgiving 2 while working with a budget closer to the initial one, which was around $15 million. The first film earned over $40 million at the worldwide box office.
Roth mentioned, “We’re increasing the stakes, but not by using more funds. This keeps things streamlined and focused, pushing us to make tough choices. A lot of groundwork we laid in the initial phase is no longer necessary now. It allows for a cleaner, more impactful outcome.
Roth hinted that the upcoming film will include an authentic, exhilarating chase sequence reminiscent of the 1995 horror-thriller Mute Witness, as well as a memorable scene featuring Karen Cliche’s character wielding a pitchfork, much like in the original movie.
“I’ve devised some difficult ideas that I want to execute flawlessly because if these are the kill scenes I believe will be the most impressive, then this might be my only chance to create another film.
He added, “It truly felt like a validation of the joy I find in knowing that a Thanksgiving movie exists and is loved, with people now revisiting classic horror films due to it. It seems we’ve started a new tradition. All one desires is to make an impact – positive or negative – on popular culture. In time, all will be forgotten. What remains will be the movies.
For Roth, Thanksgiving was a long-awaited project that initially began as a mock trailer for Grindhouse in 2007. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that the movie grew into a full-length feature. The story revolves around an axe-wielding killer from Plymouth, Massachusetts, who wreaks havoc on the survivors and even those involved, leading up to a Black Friday sale that spiraled into a gruesome disaster.
2023’s horror movie featured actresses like Nell Verlaque, Addison Rae, and Patrick Dempsey alongside actors such as Gabriel Davenport, Jalen Thomas Brooks, and Rick Hoffman, along with several other notable personalities.
Thanksgiving 2 is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2025.
