Terrifier Remake Turned Down by Creator After Studio Wanted Less Gore

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of slasher films, I must admit that the Terrifier franchise has always stood out for its unrelenting gore and Art the Clown’s chilling presence. So, when I heard about Damien Leone’s encounter with major studios wanting to ‘reboot’ the series for a wider audience, it sent a shiver down my spine.

The Terrifying series, famous for its gruesomely violent scenes in the horror genre, has sparked interest from significant film studios, as suggested by director Damien Leone, who mentioned a desire for a Terrifying remake.

What did Damien Leone say about Terrifier?

In an interview with Total Film, Leone reminisced about a period when the Terrifier series almost got signed by a major movie studio. However, Leone didn’t specify which studio or timeframe, but he mentioned that the studio aimed to “restart” the franchise with changes to attract a broader audience.

Leone stated, “They aimed to restart it for a broader public, but that wasn’t my preference. They’d often suggest, ‘It needs to be rated R, it can’t be as gruesome as you made it,'” he said. “I realized they wouldn’t allow me to film the initial 10 minutes of what I envisioned for Terrifier 3, so I decided, ‘Let’s just stick with the essence of this series.’

The Terrifier movie series, which debuted in 2016, consists of slasher films featuring David Howard Thornton as the menacing character Art the Clown, who dons a clown costume. Following the success of the first film, a second Terrifier movie was launched in 2022, generating an impressive $15.7 million at the box office on a budget of only $250,000. The third installment, Terrifier 3, is scheduled for release on October 11, 2024.

Earlier on X (previously known as Twitter), Leone hinted that Terrifier 3 would include one of the most distressing scenes in the entire series. He posted, “I can truthfully say we just filmed one of the most incredibly gruesome scenes in the Terrifier franchise, and it’s hard to believe who found it too intense on set. Behind-the-scenes is hilarious. I can’t wait for you all to witness it!
