As a seasoned researcher with over two decades of experience in the tech and finance industry, I find myself intrigued by the latest developments surrounding Pavel Durov and Telegram. Having closely followed the rise of encrypted messaging platforms, I must admit that Telegram’s success story is truly remarkable, reaching a billion users and becoming a staple in the digital asset sector.
According to reports from TF1 TV and BFM TV, Pavel Durov – the founder of the widely-used messaging app Telegram – was apprehended at Bourget airport near Paris. This occurred around 6 PM GMT on Saturday, following his arrival in France from Azerbaijan. Durov’s wealth is estimated to surpass $15 billion.
The event transpired during an investigation launched by French authorities against Telegram, due to their perceived lack of moderation and censorship within the messaging app that is popular among privacy-conscious users. Specifically, OFMIN, a French regulatory agency, has taken issue with Durov for not implementing stringent controls on his platform aimed at curbing the inappropriate use of Telegram.
Established in 2023, OFMIN’s primary role involves safeguarding minors from assault, cyberbullying, and illegal activities such as drug trafficking, among others. Currently, its focus is on dismantling Telegram due to its disregard for local laws. Unfortunately, this online platform has become a hub for inappropriate and sometimes deceptive content.
On one side, Durov may be charged this coming Sunday, but on the opposite front, the Russian Embassy in France is actively working to resolve the matter, according to a TASS news report. Interestingly, Durov’s team has not submitted any formal request for assistance yet.
Telegram, now boasting over a billion users worldwide, has emerged as a significant success tale. Its secure, end-to-end encrypted system empowers users to swiftly disseminate info, making it a widely adopted resource in the digital assets sector.
Among the notable blockchain projects linked to Telegram are Notcoin (NOT) and Hamster Kombat (HMSTR). These popular games on Telegram boast a large, dedicated user base. Earlier this year, the NOT token experienced a significant surge in value, while the Token Generation Event (TGE) for HMSTR tokens has not yet occurred.
Enthusiast of Dogecoin (DOGE), Elon Musk, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a previous independent presidential candidate who recently withdrew his candidacy and was supportive of Donald Trump, have called for the liberation of Durov and championed the cause of free speech.
The Crash of Toncoin (TON)
The digital currency called Toncoin (TON), which is used on The Open Network blockchain linked with the Telegram platform, has fallen a substantial 18.5% over the last day. Despite an enormous increase of 732.63% in trading volume to reach $2.1 billion, the market value of this cryptocurrency decreased to $13.8 billion, leaving it in the top 10 list of cryptocurrencies ranked by market cap.

Starting from August 2023, TON has experienced a significant surge, rising by 282.73%. The integration with Telegram for Toncoin has proven to be successful thus far. Nevertheless, the TradingView chart indicates that the Relative Strength Index of TON stands at 35.70, suggesting that sellers are exerting considerable pressure and the bears appear to be dominating the price trend of Toncoin.
