Team USA has made it to the final of the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off by leading their group, but their triumph was marred by an injury sustained by Charlie McAvoy during a recent win against Team Finland. As a result, McAvoy had to be hospitalized due to the injury and is currently undergoing recovery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Here’s everything you need to know regarding McAvoy’s latest injury.
What happened to Charlie McAvoy?
It has been verified that Charlie McAvoy, a member of the Boston Bruins, sustained an injury to his right shoulder’s AC joint.
On February 13, during their final group match against Team Finland, a regrettable event transpired as Team USA prevailed with a score of 6-1, under the leadership of Mike Sullivan’s team. Upon returning to Boston, the 27-year-old NHL athlete started feeling more intense discomfort. Subsequently, the Boston Bruins’ medical team arranged for X-rays, MRIs, and blood tests. The results showed an infection in McAvoy’s right shoulder, in addition to his existing joint injury.
After winning a bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship, the player has been admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital. An update on their status was shared by Dr. Peter Asnis, the Bruins’ Head Team Physician, via their social media platform. According to his statement, McAvoy had an “irrigation and debridement” procedure due to his injury. Currently, he is receiving intravenous antibiotics for treatment. His condition is showing signs of improvement day by day.

It’s uncertain how long McAvoy will be out of action due to his shoulder injury. During a press conference on Tuesday, Team USA’s head coach and McAvoy’s father-in-law, Mike Sullivan, shared his dismay about the player’s state. “I’m sorry for him as he’s an exceptional young man and a fantastic hockey player,” said the veteran coach. “Despite the situation, he remains upbeat. I know he’s frustrated because he won’t be able to compete for the championship,” Sullivan added, as reported by CBS News.
McAvoy’s injury means he won’t be able to participate in the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off final on Thursday, which takes place at Boston’s TD Garden. On that day, Team USA will go up against a strong Team Canada.
