Renowned director Quentin Tarantino discussed his current perspectives on the movie industry and upcoming projects during an interview with film critic Elvis Mitchell at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. Tarantino, who traveled from Israel for this occasion, mentioned that he’s taking his time before starting his next film project. “I’m in no rush to dive into production,” he explained. “I’ve been busy doing that for 30 years. Next month my son will be turning 5, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
The director shared his intention to harmonize his professional and family responsibilities, explaining, “While I’m in America, I focus on my work as a writer. When I’m in Israel, though, I become an ‘abba’, or father.” He further mentioned that he wishes to wait until his children grow up enough to comprehend and cherish the memory of him creating a film.
Currently, Tarantino isn’t engaged in making a movie, but he shared that he’s penning a play. In other words, when asked about his current activities, he mentioned that he’s working on a play and it’s likely to be the next venture he tackles. Furthermore, if this play turns out to be a success, he hinted that it could potentially serve as his final film endeavor.
In a change of tone, Tarantino voiced his discontent regarding the contemporary film industry. He lamented the brief theater showings and the swift move of films to streaming services. “What’s a movie these days? Something that plays in theaters for a meager release for just four weeks, only to be available on television by the second week?” he questioned. “I didn’t get into this line of work for dwindling returns,” he asserted.
The director spoke out against the existing movie distribution system, labeling it a “spectacle more than substance” and expressing his disappointment that it has significantly deteriorated since 1999. In contrast to this, he considered the theater as the last unexplored territory, highlighting the unique and exclusive nature of the live performance.
