Following the poor performance of “Snow White” at the cinema, Disney elected to temporarily halt their plans for a live-action version of “Tangled.
Tangled Was In The Works – Until Now
The reimagining of “Tangled” was in its preliminary stages, with director Michael Gracey from “The Greatest Showman” and screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson involved. This combination sparked excitement among many fans who envisioned a captivating retelling of Rapunzel’s story, an enchanting setting, and a talented cast. However, recent developments have confirmed that the project has been shelved indefinitely. While Disney hasn’t released an official statement, industry sources suggest that the project is currently on hold – at least temporarily.
Snow White Didn’t Hit – But Don’t Blame Rachel Zegler
Following the poor performance of “Snow White” at the cinema, Disney chose not to move forward with its live-action adaptation of “Tangled” due to its lackluster reception. From the outset, “Snow White” was shrouded in controversy, yet it ultimately failed to impress. Audience members had concerns about the casting, the aesthetic, and the script. Despite high expectations, nothing resonated, leaving the film falling short of Disney’s aspirations.
In a swift and relentless response, Rachel Zegler faced an onslaught of criticism online, despite the fact that much of the backlash was unrelated to her personally. Her actions, interviews, and even choices in costume design for Snow White were meticulously scrutinized. The controversy surrounding her casting as Snow White ignited from the start, with some arguing that a fair-skinned actress should play the role, overlooking Rachel’s Colombian heritage and considerable acting talent. To make matters worse, she endured constant hate simply for being a young, vocal woman in the spotlight, whether it was expressing her political views or displaying confidence that some found discomforting. As Tangled fades from Disney’s plans, the criticism against Rachel Zegler has resurfaced once more.
It’s worth noting that the majority of the discussion revolved around the movie’s visual aspects, with relatively little focus on the acting. Critics argued that Gal Gadot fell short in her portrayal, offering no depth or impact to her character. Conversely, Rachel Zegler received accolades, particularly for her strong singing abilities, which stood out as one of the film’s rare strengths.
So, Who’s To Blame?
It seems that it might have been more advantageous for Disney to concentrate on enhancing their script quality, and perhaps consider pausing the production of live-action remakes temporarily. Although some fans were disheartened upon learning that the Tangled remake was put on hold, others found themselves pleasantly relieved. Many feel that the continuous flow of remakes is becoming monotonous, uninspired, and superfluous – particularly since the original Tangled enjoyed immense success and has been one of Disney’s most cherished contemporary movies. To a great number of people, it doesn’t require a reboot as it’s already flawless in its original form.
What’s Next For Disney, And Is There Still Hope For The Live-Action Tangled?
Although some fans are disheartened, having eagerly anticipated this project and even suggesting their preferred cast choices (such as Sabrina Carpenter as Rapunzel, Taylor Zakhar Perez as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel), there’s still exciting live-action content on the horizon. For instance, Moana is scheduled for 2026, followed by Lilo & Stitch in May 2025. Unfortunately, it seems that Tangled may be on hold for now, with no clear indication of when Disney might resume active development. In the meantime, we’ll simply have to stay patient and wait for further updates.
Preferring that The Tangled live-action film features Taybrina in the lead roles instead of wishing it would not be produced due to doubts about Disney making suitable casting decisions.
