Tales of the Shire delivers a slice of Hobbit life

As a lifelong fan of Middle-earth and all things Tolkien, I must say that Tales of the Shire has me feeling as warm and cozy as a freshly baked second breakfast in the heart of Hobbiton. This game offers an enchanting experience that perfectly captures the charm and whimsy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the simple, peaceful life of our beloved Hobbits.

The premise of Tales of the Shire (a.k.a Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game) is clear within the first few minutes after meeting Orlo Proudfoot. “Big People sort out their differences with swords, bows and arrows,” he says. “We sort them out with a nice spot of lunch.” Indeed, Tales of the Shire is about carving out a peaceful existence in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world. As part of Hobbit Day, Shacknews recently had a chance to give Private Division and Weta Workshop’s life sim another shot.

According to our Summer Game Fest preview, Tales of the Shire starts by letting players design their unique Hobbit character. The character creation tool offers flexibility in customizing your Hobbit’s body shape, hairstyle, facial expressions, outfits, and even specific foot traits. A fresh addition to the beginning is an opening scene where the player-created Hobbit is escorted by a particular bearded wizard to the Shire village of Bywater, marking the start of their adventure.

Tales of the Shire delivers a slice of Hobbit life

In Tales of the Shire, the concept is straightforward: You befriend the cheerful Hobbit community residing in the village. This friendship development partly occurs through completing the game’s primary missions. For instance, the Hobbits of Bywater have realized their home has yet to be officially declared a village. This triggers a chain of tasks, including locating a missing Book of Rules that seems hard to find. As you progress with these tasks, you will gradually encounter and get to know the peculiar residents of Bywater.

Among those welcoming personas, you’ll encounter Old Noakes, who guides players on angling techniques. In the idyllic Shire, casting a line and catching a fish is straightforward – just look for the ripples on the various ponds in Bywater. Once you find a suitable spot, cast your line and wait for a nibble. If you feel one, generally pulling back on the analog stick while reeling in will help catch the fish. Interestingly, Bywater’s waterways are abundant with fish, as they replenish daily, making fishing an enjoyable pastime for players.

They could grow their own produce in their garden, receive food items from friends as gifts, or complete specific tasks within the game. Once the kitchen is well-stocked, it’s time for some culinary adventures! As previously mentioned, the dishes created can differ based on the player’s approach to cooking. Players have the freedom to finely chop or dice ingredients until a progress meter at the bottom reaches its maximum, or they can maintain control over their cuts to style their dishes in a specific way. The manner in which players engage with the cooking mini-game will influence the type of dish their character prepares.

Absolutely, let me round up this sneak peek by emphasizing that cooking plays a pivotal role in the Shire. It’s one of the simplest yet effective methods to foster friendships. Given that every character in Bywater has a friendship gauge, players will find themselves eager to win over everyone. Cooking opportunities will be abundant, whether they arise through quest objectives or by personally inviting another Hobbit for a meal at home.

Looking forward to witnessing how Hobbit life and relationships unfold throughout gameplay! It’s been shared that Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game, by Private Division and Weta Workshop, will require some additional baking time before its release. Anticipate its arrival on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch in the year 2025.
