Sydney Sweeney is close to securing her role in the upcoming live-action version of the famous Japanese science fiction military series, Gundam, produced by Legendary.
According to Jeff Sneider from The InSneider newsletter, Sweeney has been given an offer worth $7 million to take on the female lead role in a movie. This actress is a two-time Emmy nominee, earning her accolades for her performances in Euphoria and The White Lotus. Following the massive success of the 2023 film Anyone but You, which brought in over $220 million on a budget of just $25 million, Sweeney’s potential as a leading actress in movies has soared to new heights.
In more casual terms: Lately, Sweeney’s work has been seen in Immaculate and Eden, the latter yet to be distributed in the U.S. Coming soon are Echo Valley, a thriller for Apple TV+ starring Julianne Moore, The Housemaid, a thriller directed by Paul Feig featuring her alongside Amanda Seyfried, and a biopic focused on boxer Christy Martin.
Who is involved with Sydney Sweeney in the Gundam live-action movie?
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I, Jim Mickle, will be the one writing and directing the live-action adaptation of the iconic Gundam series! This project is a joint effort between Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks. You might recognize my name from Sweet Tooth, the captivating fantasy drama that ran for three seasons on Netflix. I’ll be working alongside Linda Moran to produce this masterpiece through our company, Nightshade. Can’t wait to bring this beloved anime to life!
Plot details for Gundam remain under wraps.
Originating from the mind of Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam represents a renowned Japanese science-fiction universe centered around colossal combat robots, known as mecha. This extensive franchise was first introduced in 1979 through the animated series Mobile Suit Gundam. Since then, it has grown to encompass numerous films, TV shows, novels, video games, and manga, captivating audiences worldwide.
In the spring of 2021, it was revealed that a live-action Gundam movie would be produced. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for his work on Kong: Skull Island, agreed to direct this project for Netflix. However, by October 2024, Vogt-Roberts and Netflix had parted ways, with Mickle stepping in to write and oversee the direction instead.
The production will start towards the end of this year once Sweeney completes her acting duties for Euphoria Season 3.
