Sydney Sweeney, who played Madame Web in the Sony/Marvel film that underperformed at the box office, has shared her genuine motivations for taking on the role.
Madame Web, released in February 2024 as the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man series, tells the backstory of its titular character, portrayed by Dakota Johnson. Sweeney found himself among Johnson’s three main co-stars alongside Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor. In this movie, their trio is pursued by Ezekiel Sims, a sinister clairvoyant who intends to eliminate them before they can defeat him in the future.
Regarding the superhero film Madame Web, despite its comparatively small budget of $80 million, it unfortunately failed to impress at the box office, earning only about $100 million globally. Critics’ reactions were largely unfavorable, with some even labeling it as one of the worst superhero movies ever produced.
Why did Sydney Sweeney do Madame Web?
As a passionate gamer speaking about my role in Madame Web, I’d like to share why I chose to be part of this Sony/Marvel project. In an exclusive chat with Empire, I opened up about the two key factors that ignited my desire to star in this film.
She stated, “Up until then, I hadn’t made a studio film, but I had established my production company, Fifty-Fifty Films. I possessed certain projects that I yearned to showcase in the studios, and I needed to boost my reputation within the studio environment.
Sweeney added, “I also desired to engage in an activity that my adolescent cousins could observe. I’m surrounded by a bunch of teenage cousins, and they often struggle to grasp what I’m doing. It seemed incredibly exciting to me to find something they’d genuinely find entertaining and cool.
Approximately a year after, Sweeney expressed that she harbors no remorse for being part of Madame Web. She emphasized that she “really enjoyed the experience, and that’s what truly matters to me.” She further added that as long as you’re enjoying your work, the end result – be it box office success or otherwise – doesn’t hold much significance. However, she acknowledged a desire for the film to be well-received, cherished, and successful, as such outcomes ensure everyone involved benefits.
Madame Web is currently streaming on Netflix.
