The network decided on this move despite extending the series into 2024 for an eighth season. SWAT Season 9 gets canceled by CBS, Season 8 to wrap things up

Back in May 2024, it was surprising when CBS chose to prolong S.W.A.T. for a remarkable eighth season (as reported by Deadline). However, the decision has now been made to conclude the show permanently.

Over the past two years, S.W.A.T. had been granted last-minute extensions while Sony Pictures Television worked out the finances with CBS. On this occasion, however, CBS decided not to engage in renewal negotiations and opted to end the series instead.

Initially, CBS terminated the police drama featuring Shemar Moore in May 2023 following its sixth season. However, they later changed their mind and revived it for a seventh season. In the end, the network decided to conclude the show with its eighth season.

After CBS’s recent choices to terminate FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, it’s worth noting that these shows, along with the original FBI, are all created by external production companies (Sony TV and Universal Television). For the upcoming season, CBS has already scheduled drama slots with Sheriff Country and Boston Blue. Additionally, the network is actively working on potential spinoffs for FBI and The Equalizer.

Showrunner Andrew Dettmann reacts to SWAT’s second cancellation

Andrew Dettmann, the executive producer and showrunner, expressed that the cancellation was “devastating.” He shared, “It’s been an absolute joy collaborating with this exceptional cast and crew to create a series we could always be proud of. They are an incredibly talented and dedicated group who have faced numerous hurdles over eight seasons, and they have done so with unwavering determination” (as reported by Deadline).

Previously in charge as both showrunner and executive producer, Shawn Ryan expressed his gratitude for having worked on SWAT over eight seasons, crafting narratives around Hondo and 20-Squad. He acknowledged the support from fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of the cast, producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios, and CBS for providing this unique opportunity.

The move by CBS is happening at a time when Skydance is planning to purchase Paramount Global, its current owner. They anticipate finalizing the transaction during the early part of the year.
