Survivor and the Endless Gaze and more books about TV to put on your radar

As a lifelong fan of television, I find myself absolutely thrilled by the plethora of upcoming books that delve into the lives and careers of some of my favorite TV personalities.

Are you usually engrossed in a book? I feel you! I’m always on the hunt for the next tale or realm that will captivate my thoughts and curiosity, taking me on a delightful journey whether it’s a romance or fantasy novel. However, there are moments when I find myself yearning for non-fiction. Narratives can be found in books that delve into real-life people and events too. History, in particular, is intriguing, especially when it comes from someone who lived through those times or an author equally passionate about the subject as you are.

Norman Lear: His Life and Times by Tripp Whetsell

When Norman Lear, a giant in television production, passed away at 101 years old, we lost a pioneer who significantly shaped the landscape of TV, particularly comedy, during the late 20th century. His work as a writer and producer broke new ground, allowing for more open and frank discussions on the small screen. In the 70s, sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” “Maude,” and others dared to tackle tough subjects that had previously been taboo on TV. These included race, class, politics, sexuality, and religion. By doing so, they sparked conversations among Americans about these topics in a more candid and honest manner.

Tripp Whetsell’s study delves into Lear’s seven-decade professional journey, examining his works through investigation and discussions. This exploration focuses on the groundbreaking era in television that Lear led, an era marked by his shows which weekly invited underrepresented communities into homes during primetime hours. These shows provided a unique platform for viewers to recognize their own lives and explore different lifestyles simultaneously. The book serves as both a homage to Lear and a chronicle of the entertainment industry during the zenith of his career.
