It is said that on his deathbed, Hennessy accused ‘the Dagoes’, which sparked one of the most significant lynch mobs in American history. A mob rampaged through the jail and executed 11 Italian men, some believed to have Mafia links. This incident catapulted the Sicilian Mafia into national prominence and etched New Orleans into the narrative of organized crime’s origins in the United States.
