Suriya’s Retro to be a limited series of 4-5 episodes on OTT after 3 months? Karthik Subbaraj spills beans

Originally premiering on the big screen featuring Suriya in the main role on May 1, 2025, the movie “Retro” is now available for streaming on Netflix. It appears that director Karthik Subbaraj plans to release the film as a limited series with extra footage.

During an interview on Galatta Plus, the filmmaker shared that he intends to distribute the story in a limited series format and has held talks with a prominent OTT service. Yet, it appears that this streaming platform isn’t as interested in the idea at the moment.

According to what he said, he discussed with the OTT platform about adding additional emotional and action-packed scenes for the movie, which wouldn’t only include deleted scenes but also deeper emotions and detailed action sequences. This extension was planned to be released three months after the OTT premiere. However, they aren’t willing to agree because they have their own series in production.

The director went on to say, “I aim to present aspects of the film that I found intriguing during production. From a segmented viewpoint, it would consist of approximately four to five episodes, each lasting around 40 minutes. There would be a greater emphasis on the spiritual, cult, and comedic elements.

The film Retro tells the story of Paari, a son raised by a crime boss and viewed as a ruthless tool by his adoptive father. Longing to escape the violent life suggested by Rukmini’s advice, he begins to distance himself from his father, causing even more turmoil.

Struggling with his own life and longing to be united with his beloved, Paari comes to understand that his future extends far beyond these circumstances, as an entire village eagerly awaits his homecoming.

In this movie, Suriya takes on the main character, while a talented group of actors such as Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, and others, play significant roles. The film was mostly praised but also had some constructive criticisms upon its release.

On the professional side of things for actor Suriya, he’s gearing up for his next project, provisionally named Suriya 45. This time, he’ll be teaming up with Trisha Krishnan. Known as RJ Balaji, the director is expected to deliver a film packed with commercial appeal.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the actor is currently engaged in the production of a film provisionally named Suriya 46, directed by Venky Atluri alongside Lucky Bhaskar.
